when you say "a piece of wood", what do you mean? some basic plywood or chipboard work for you? or are you looking for some better quality finish material to make a proper looking desk out of?

Not to be a jerk or anything, but if you don't even know where to buy lumber, you probably aren't cut out for building a desk.

Ikea has tabletops and legs both. Other than that, any place which sells wood in general for small business or home owners. They aren't always happy to take smaller orders (I wonder why buying customer is sometimes too much), but should have some scrap wood available.

Pretty much every DIY store will have table tops you can buy. Some places will even cut them to size.

And as said, IKEA will also have table tops and legs that you can mix to your hearts desire.

Last I checked we still don't have Ikea in NZ. There are some importers who bring limited items in at heavily inflated prices.

New Zealand has no Ikea.

New Zealand has no Homedepot.

Then go to a DIY store, a lumber yard or a carpentry business.

They will more than likely have tabletops you can buy.

Why dont you go to a place where they are building new houses and check out the dumpster, they got plenty of wood there, plywood and sticks.

If not then if you dont know where to get lumber from, you should not be building nothing. A quick 2 second search revealed puffy white clouds!

Depending on how clean or how cheap you want. Something like pallets are also good for really basic desk. Some LAN parties use them for tables. It would need only 3-4 of them. One as top, 2-3 for legs. Some corner brackets and some plastic cover, maybe even vinyl to make surface look clean.
