GoPro has released its new products that aim to lift its struggling share price. The new Hero 5 and Session 5 are both waterproof to 10m as well as able to shoot up to 4K 30fps video. The Hero 5 trades size for a larger sensor, RAW support, Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS) and a touch screen.

 

The Karma drone is a foldable drone that comes with a touchscreen controller and a detachable 3-axis gimble arm. It has the usual flight modes orbit, cable cam, reveal etc. Though no word on object tracking.

 

Pricing

Hero 5: $399

Session 5: $299

Karma: $799

Karma + Hero 5: $1099

Karma + Session 5: $999

 

Gopro has also annouced a cloud service that will automatically back up the videos when the cameras are plugged into charge, this will enable pulling files from the cloud on any devices. Furthermore they have announced automatic edits in their soon to be release 'Quik for desktop' app.

 

IMHO the cameras themselves look pretty run of the mill. The main upgrades are the EIS(on the hero) and the waterproofing, the video is still 4K 30fps which hasn't changed since 2014 (Though the Hero 5 now supports RAW). The main innovation is in the Karma drone that is foldable as well as being a standalone stabiliser that can be detached.

To be honest, the reason why I don't consider buying GoPro cameras is their cost. The only one I'll really consider is the Session as it's a more reasonable price than their other cameras, as well as being more compact. It seems like they've bumped the price for the Session 5, though.

I bought one back in 2012 and it is still a great camera, I consider it a great investment as the market has only just seemed to catch up in terms of competitors. Then again with this the market will has to respond and I wonder how it'll compare to the new sony action cam and the xiaomi yi

The nikon ones look good for more rugged applications but the sensor looks to be physically a lot smaller meaning for lower light I'd expect it to struggle more than the Hero 5

The drone is pretty sick, folds up to be super portable, then you just detatch the gimbal, put it on the handle and boom

 

for $1100, getting a very capable drone, handheld gimbal and top end 4k go pro, is really good value

I'm glad they simplified the lineup. 

 

There was no point in having Silver and Black versions.

They look sleek, but at this point i tought they would be giving 4K 60fps a go, rather than making a seamless design with water resistance uncovered.

maybe next time, 4k60 is hard to do. it could be sensor issue or even storage speed/processing issue.

I'd imagine it's a sensor and ISP issue. They use effectively smartphone sensors so a consumer level 4K 60 pipeline just isn't viable at the moment.

GoPro launched a budget line of cameras for all the people complaining they want cheaper ones, not more expensive ones

 

and it totally flopped. GoPro had significant layoffs after dropped profits

People keep saying they want budget model GoPro's, but apparently nobody will vote with their wallets. I bet the people complaining about prices of them are just people who will never bother to actually buy one anyway

Yea the price is up (although the launch price is lower) but it also is really improved. It's got more or less the same video capabilities as the Black. The last one was more like the white/silver specs.

The data transfer rate is stupidly huge compared to 4K30fps. This is why no phones have it

It's not all that bad, 4k60 just needs to be 100-150Mbps. Plenty of SD cards can handle that.

It was more of 700Mb/s someone calculated it on the forum before when we were talking about the iPhone 7 before it came out

I have a Hero 2 and a Hero 4. The quality the 4 is outstanding, though the 2 is definitely beginning to show it's age. At the time it was great. Maybe I'll pick up the 7 when it's released.

often times high frame rate options are recorded at reduced quality

 

example on my Sony A7, HD at 25fps is at 25mbps, and its 28mbps for 50fps 

 

they dont just double the recording size

 

Eg the new Panasonic G5 can record 4k at 30fps in 4:2;2 10bit, but its only 4:2;0 8bit when recorded at 60fps
