RAM speed for VM box?

aisle9

We've got just about everything we need for my wife's VM/gaming box except the motherboard and RAM. In short, i7-6700, eventually 16GB of RAM. I know gaming systems can work just fine on DDR4-2133 RAM, which opens up H170 boards, but do VMs need faster RAM? She's planning on only running a couple of VMs at a time, so let's say she'll be running 4 at once, worst-case scenario, to be sure.

The RAM question, of course, leads into motherboards. If she needs faster RAM, she needs a Z170 board. If she's good at 2133, a cheaper H170 will suffice. Is she ok at 2133, or will she need more speed?

No VM's dont need faster RAM. shes is fine at 1866 or 2133. My serve runs 1600 ECC and its perfectly fine :)

My main PC seems fine for multiple VMs at 1600Mhz DDR3 through virtualbox, so I'm sure 2133 DDR4 will be fine.

With many VMs the RAM speed is not as important as the amount you have so 2133MHz should be perfectly fine.

Thanks @Altecice, @NinjaJc01 and @Analog!

One last question for you guys: given that there's no need for faster RAM and I've confirmed with her (i.e., told her) that she won't be BCLK overclocking, do you think a B150 board would be suitable for VM boxing/light to moderate gaming? Specifically, this B150 board? Her GPU will be a 4GB 960...amazing, I know...and I doubt she'll take it higher than an RX 480, maybe a GTX 1060 at most.

Unless, I mean, I get a 1080 and give her my 1070. But, you know, mortgage.

I quite like some of the features on B series boards, especially above H series, but that's Haswell that I have learnt about.

It looks like a good board. Is that crossfire support? I see 2 16xs but I know it doesn't support SLI.

Yep, Crossfire, no SLI. Like I said, she may end up with a 480 or (and I'm really interested in this possibility) two 8GB 470s.

8GB 470s? Is that a thing? If not, will it be?

There are others. I think MSI makes one. Boggles my mind, too. A bit of overclocking and you've got a GPU that beats a stock-speed 480.

I want one. I think that'll replace my 750 Ti in my second PC nicely, since it's cheap for the performance.
