How much proteins do I need to take?

I just bought 1 kilogram of proteins and I am really confused.. It says I need to take proteins 1 hour before and 1 hour after workout. But it also says to make the mixture I need to use 100g/2 cups which doesn't make any sense since I got only 1000g of proteins all together.. That would mean that this kilogram would only last a few days. And my friend told me that 1 kilogram should last me at least a month cuz 2 kilograms lasted him 2-3. Help?

I'll preface this with, unless you're seriously trying to bulk up, body builder style, you do not need protein supplements. Just drink some Chocolate Milk or eat some Chicken fingers or Tuna or something.

 

Now, with that in mind, your friend probably isn't following the directions properly. Probably because the directions are ridiculous and are trying to encourage you to buy that pack every week or whatever.

 

Now, I'd read the instructions very carefully over again - it says the mixture is 100g/2-Cup of water (Kind of funny, mixing metric and imperial measurements in the same damn sentence lol).

 

But does it say you're supposed to DRINK that entire 2-cup mixture in one sitting? Or is that mixture supposed to last both before and after the workout?

Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet.  An increase of weight may happen. Not suitable for children and young persons. Not suitable for diabetics. A varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle are recommended. Keep out of reach of children.

 

That's what it says. I am trying to bulk up seriously.. I bought these proteins because they were under the Fast Muscle Gainer category. I go to the gym everyday for 1.5-2 hours.

Oh so it's not 100g per 2-cups like you said in the OP, it's 100g per 170mL of water. That makes significantly more sense.

 

So yes. They want you to use 100g per day, ideally 200g per day. If your friend is making a 1Kg bag last 2-3 months, then he's not following the directions.

 

Either that, or he simply doesn't work out very frequently. FYI there's really no point in taking the supplement on a non-workout day.

No he used 2kgs lasted him 2-3 months.. And he's a big guy so I doubt he was doing something wrong. Maybe he got something different... So wait if I drink 200g per day that means it would only last me a week. That makes no sense o.O

They're not going to be good. Seriously, if you're not a bodybuilder, you're probably wasting your money. Your body doesn't really need that much protein, and you can get all you need by just eating some meat or other protein source (Like peanut butter).

 

If you want a month supply, you'll need to buy a bigger bag.

I live in a dorm. And I get $ 15 per week. So I really can't afford stuff like that. I thought proteins would be a better solution. If I bought food everyday I would need much more money.

Since it is a supplement it is not regulated by the FDA so researchers have found some protein powders to have extremely high levels of heavy metals. Also they are usually protein from plants that is so processed your body can barely recognize it. If you want to build muscle just eat well balanced and maybe a bit more protein in areas. You might not get ripped as fast as others but the quality of life your could say I guess is going to be much better.

Don't know about UK regulations, but keep in mind that US FDA doesn't regulate Supplements. Meaning, a protein supplement has no guarantee to actually contain protein. Or anything else the label says. Hell, the label could be entirely made up fake ingredients that don't even exist.

 

If he needs more protein in his diet (Which is unlikely, if he's eating healthy), then just eating a can of Tuna or an extra Chicken Breast or a peanut butter based snack, for example, would be totally fine. Supplements, in the US at least, are mostly a ripoff, since you have no idea what you're getting at any given moment.

If you're trying to build muscle or lose weight then about 1.0-1.5g of protein per lb of body mass. 

 

So if you weigh 150lbs then eat about 150-225g of protein. Some people like to go up to 2g of protein per lb but honestly thats just unnecessary. As others have mentioned, try to get your macros from whole foods. Supplements are exactly what their name implies, a supplement to a regular diet.

Well you should be eating every day, just upping your calorie intake and upping protein heavy foods will do better than shitty suplements

 

i often go to the supermarket late at night and get all the bargain meat being sold off because its sell by date - then freeze it to use later etc

 

In fact I got an entire leg of lamb last week for £3 instead of £23 because it was the last day of sale

Yep discount meat can be a great deal. You just gotta remember to freeze it or eat it the same day. Otherwise they'll often spoil within a day or two.

In the UK regulation is very strange too depending on the supplement, but it's generally more policed by the FSA and MHRA then it is in the states. As for protein though, companies can easily say they're selling good sources of protein and then actually sell very low quality protein which your body wont actually absorb. But there are some good, well trusted and transparent companies in the UK (As well as a load of rubbish ones ofc). 

As for actually using supplements, there are genuine cases where you should take them as an additional aid.

Getting over the 'recommended daily allowance' of protein however is beyond easy, and most people do it without realising or needing to change their diets, supplements certainly aren't meant to be used as a replacement for food.

I get my meat from the butcher shop directly, though they go through so much meat there is never old stock.  mmmm ribeye steakums

 

Supplements are never an adequate substitute for a healthy diet.  If you're not getting enough protein, adjust your diet accordingly rather than filling your body with crap.

 

When I used to work out, I couldn't bulk up I could only get a good tone and strong endurance.  Some bodies will not bulk up, be aware of that.  At the time, I even started step bombing in combination with protein supplements, as I didn't know better and I still didn't bulk up.  I couldn't even get my veins to pop to show off my tone!  I was working out for 1.5-2hrs everyday.

You don't need to eat pure protein to get big. Just go on a clean bulk diet and increase calories (not sugar calories so cutting can be easier). You can research specifics. Lean meat is all you need. Oh yeah, working out is also important.

This isn't exactly true, unless you have a medical condition like muscular dystrophy or something that would prevent the growth of muscle then you can 'bulk up'. 

Some people will be extreme ectomorphs with high metabolisms but with increased calories, good dieting, a good workout plan and dedication you can grow muscles and bulk up. Everybody is unique and complex, two people on the same diet with the same routine wont grow at the same rate or in the same way.

@o0Martin I was training everyday for 3 years.  I most certainly built strength, my muscles did get larger, but I never got bulky.  I was pretty thin though, 160lbs soaking wet 183cm tall.  Managed to get up to 180lbs working out but that was all the bulk I could get.  I'm 230 of fat now.

and that you did gain endurance and you got more toned. That sounds about right to be honest, people always assume the more they train the bigger they will get, it makes sense, but it really isn't optimal for mass gaining, for purely building mass in general people should focus on compound movements (supplemented with isolation movements) and they should be training no more than 45mins to 1 hour every session, and they need a good split. For people who really find it hard to gain muscle mass training 3 times a week will do them better than every day of the week (And it will avoid all the negatives that come with 'over training').

You should be taking what your body NEEDS. I hate the whole supplement idea. It's why America/FirstWorldCountries are so overmedicated. Whatever your religion is, your body was made/evolved into something which knows MORE than science (believe it or not). Only drink when you're thirsty, and take protein/supplements if your body thinks you need it. I'd say try to get the majority of your protein intake from foods. However, if you MUST result too a mix, take the SUGGESTED amount on the package.

Just wondering, why do you want to have a protein package? Are you medically indicative of it?
