Running A GPU with an APU

Apparently when you install a high end GPU with an APU, the APU's graphic cores are disabled, I want to know if this is true, and I would like to know what the best graphics card I can use alongside my A10 without the Graphic Cores being disabled.
Where to begin with this one? Right here, I'll begin right here:
With desktop computers there is absolutely no reason to have the on die graphics enabled when using a graphics card, with one exception. That exception is if you are intending to run Folding At Home. On laptops, it's extremely beneficial to have both, as the on die graphics use less energy. This allows you to still have good performance while increasing battery life. So for your situation, there's no reason to have both.
The best graphics card that you can use is the nicest graphics card out there. But with that processor, I wouldn't go above the performance of a 1060 or an RX 480. Obviously better than that will yield better performance, but at ever decreasing returns. You're CPU will be a massive bottleneck in a system with anything nicer than the above cards.
