LN2 Help

For my physics final which is in May or June I have to give a demo and explain it. For my demo I was going to OC a cpu or GPU, haven't decided with LN2. The school as a giant tank of LN2 that is filled every other day or so that they will let me use. The part that I am wondering about is what kind of motherboard would I need for this type of OCing. If I chose to go with CPU OCing do I need a special motherboard out of the normal gaming on everything type? My plan was to OC a 980 and maybe an fx6300. I know the 980s OC pretty well but don't know about the fx6300. All knowledge will help! I was going to practice at how with dry ice and alcohol.

I think you should OC that 6800K under LN2 you know...not like if something goes wrong, you'll be a few bucks out of pocket :P

You'll want to go something that won't completely explode because of the temperature shock, like an ASUS Maximus or Gene board, preferably with their "thermal armor." You'll also want to fill the pins with dielectric grease, something that has gone out of fashion recently due to RMA concerns (it's practically impossible to get it out, and it doesn't do much when air or liquid cooling), but that undoubtedly improves safety at extremely low temperatures. If you do use LN2, it is required to prevent the metals in the socket from cracking, aside from the entire thing going bang. Once you finish, you won't be able to use the motherboard again unless you're doing another sub-zero build.

What about vaseline? Also would a pentium be a better choice? I plan to continue OCing with crushed dry ice and other experimental methods afterwards.

The problem with using a Pentium is the general low levels of heat generated make it less likely that LN2 will significantly improve the overclock.  Not saying it's impossible, just that you stand a better chance of showing the benefit of extreme cooling on something that really needs extreme cooling.

Vaseline is OK, but LET and eraser are removable and don't leave a mess after the fact. 

 

Get something without a cold bug like an 8350 or 6300, should be fine.  Then just use like a gt610.   If you bench the gpu and cpu without knowing what you're doing, you'll have condensation issues out the wazoo.

Wat...   There's 775 pentiums that do 7+ Ghz lol, it doesn't matter how much heat the thing produces,  the concept of ln2 is to achieve the low temps that reduces thermal noise and other overclocking problems that come with normal air /water cooling.

I don't disagree (as I said, not saying it's impossible...) I just think he has a better chance of getting a positive demonstration of the effect of extreme cooling by choosing a chip with a higher TDP.

Could you explain how to not get condensation? It can be long and complex
