Why would want a crappy APU/CPU? Just get an Intel CPU "I5-6600K or I7-6700K or I7-6800K" and a "GTX 1060 or GTX 1070 or GTX 1080". Anyways, yes it is an APU.

If you wanna play Star Wars Battlefront on the lowest possible settings at 1080p with 30 or less fps, then get one (just an example).

And why would you only list Nvidia GPUs there?

Depends. 480s often start at 240$+ so 470 is a better alternative to a 3GB 1060. Besides, it's obvious that OP doesn't have a huge budget if he's looking at the 7870K, meaning an AMD GPU would probably be a better choice, hence why i asked why you didn't list any of those.

It would be better to just get an 880k cpu as it doesn't have the igpu and is cheaper.

The point of apus are that they are cheap, if someone is even considering buying one their whole computer most likely costs less then a 1070.

You cannot disable the APU (APU=CPU+ integrated GPU), you can only disable the iGPU part ;)

You can add a separate GPU, basically any GPU. Some AMD GPUs will allow you to run "dual graphics", which amounts to combining the iGPU with the GPU you add, and do something similar to rossFireX (AMD's way to use two GPUs simultaneously). This will only work on a limited combinations of APUs and GPUs, so if you attempt that, you have to check compatibility first. Since the iGPU is not that strong, it can only be paired with relatively weak cards of the AMD lineup. However, it's relatively easy to get a low end gaming GPU that won't cost that much and will outperform dual graphics.

Save some money and get an athlon or fx series if you are getting a gpu anyway

Indeed, if OP is going to use a discrete GPU anyway, going Athlon would actually save him money (OP: Athlon CPUs in the same socket (FM2+) as the APUs are basically the same as A10s but without the iGPU).

Fully agree, Athlon X4 880K costs around 85$ and comes with a Wrath cooler which performs nearly as well as a 25$ aftermarket cooler and has LEDs, what adds value to the package.

As far as the OS is concerned, the APU's GPU is a discrete GPU.  If you add a discrete GPU in addition to that, and do not disable the GPU in the APU, the OS will think you have two graphics cards and behave accordingly.  It's unlikely that you would need this setup so it generally makes sense to disable the GPU in the APU since it's mostly needless.  Unless your doing that 'Asymetrical CrossfireX' thing but that only works with a limited range of GPUs.

I did this myself with an older APU.  I had an A8-3870K system and later had a Radeon HD 6850 to hand-me-down into it, the 6850 was vastly superior to the APU's graphical offerings so I disabled it and the A8-3870K basically just became a Phenom II X4.

APU's in my opinion are good enough for low settings at low resolutions for a low budget but playable in most cases (mine in particular being shadow of mordor which I played in lowest settings at 1600x900) or online games (like world of warcraft, league of legends, CS:GO, Dota 2) at 1080p and decent framerates at high settings in most cases.

Athlon X4 is what you ant if you want to go for the FM2+ platform, or the AM3+ FX-6300 but the best if you can reach it is a i5-6600K or higher. :)
