Did you already bought the monitor? Then I would suggest going with rx 470 or 480. It would be a waste to not use freesync feature.

I already bought the monitor, If I go with a 1070 do you think freesync will really be necessary?

do you understand how adaptive refresh rate technology works?

Freesync is only for amd cards, and freesync will be useless, if you go with nvidia cards.

I know this, I'm asking if a 1070 would provide enough fps to make freesync not worth it and use vsync

it doesn't work like that, tho fast sync would work on some games.

Can you wait until October to get a new GPU? Vega will release then, and will be a lot more powerful than an RX 480. If you wait, you'll be able to get some great functionality from your monitor, and you'll have great DX-12 performance.

If you get an RX 480, you'll have a lot less performance than a GTX 1070, which could be non-satisfying. And if you get a GTX 1070, you won't get the beautifully-perfect frame-syncing that FreeSync can give you, plus you'll be allocating some performance from your GPU to software V-sync. If you can wait, you'll be able to get a great GPU for your monitor.

You should probably wait for VEGA because the RX480, best current AMD card, is not very good performance-wise compared to competition.

That's a good point, any rumors in terms of price and performance vs nvidia's Pascal?

Freesync and G-Sync are "amazing" according to my wife. She plays a lot of adventure and RPG's and she loves not noticing the framerate dipping even if the counter is in the corner.

I would say absolutely use Freesync. Why buy a 4K monitor if you have a GTX 720? Why buy a Freesync monitor if you're not going to use it?

The freesync was a bonus, that wasn't a selling point for me.

If you can wait, an RX 490 would be a lot nicer to have. It will use a lot less energy to run, and cost you, I'm guessing, more than $30 USD less per year in electricity costs. It will also have better support, and will probably run quieter, and cooler.

Freesync is great but only when it work.

You need to make sure game fps didn't drop below minimum Freesync range unless your monitor support LFC (Low Framerate Compensation) feature.

Freesync also only work on Fullscreen/Exclusive Full screen so if you're a die hard borderless/windowed guy, Freesync is  a no.
