Assuming you already have a good router, powerline totally isn't a good way to go... The best powerline adapters on the market only manage similar speeds to dual stream AC adapters (real world), while being almost double the price. And that's assuming you don't have any breakers in the way or all of the other messed up things that occur in old homes in the US.

I'm about to route a nearly 50m cat5e cable to get to the top floor of the house I just moved into because the landlord is too cheap to put in wall ethernet, and I have a NAS I actually rely on for high speed, high volume communications so the 40 MB/s offered by wifi and/or powerline is unacceptable.

You won't get very good speeds with USB dongles. I'd say look for some reviews online.

@Jutsu

You haven't really given much information. So here are some questions you need to answer before anyone can be of much help:

1. What adaptor do you currently have? Is it N? AC? G!? ... Dual Band? What speed?

2. What access point (or router) are you connecting to?

3. How far away from the AP are you? Are you in the next room or are you 20m and 5 concrete walls away?

4. How are you measuring this speed and what speed are you getting? Is it an internet speedtest? If so how fast are your uploads when you use a cable?

Then from there here's the advice I'd give:

1. If there is no major gap between your speed and the cable speed? Call your ISP

2. If there is a major gap and the issue is the speed of your AP/Router/Card? Get a new AP/Router/Card

3. If it's clear that the issue has nothing to do with the gear or your ISP? Buy a powerline kit

Fools think they know everything, experts know they know nothing
