Upgrade from a R9 285 to GTX 690?

Hey guys, I currently have a friend who's offering me a GTX 690 for $200, and have a R9 285 in my build, should I go upgrade it or wait due to my power supply? (650W Thermaltake PSU.)

Current specs are:

FX6350 overclocked to 4.4GHz

16 gigabytes of 2133Mhz ram

Sapphire R9 285 

Thermaltake smart series 650W PSU.

Just get a RX470, They are newer, same price and that PSU is more then enough!

Edit: The 690 is more powerfull then the R9 285 by 20%

A 690 (when SLI is working) is like 10% faster than a 480. When it's not working it's like 50% slower.

Yea, I believe the GTX 690 is on par with a GTX 980, but I think the minimum required is 650W, so I'm a bit worried about my PSU.

Go with something like the rx 470, 480, or gtx 1060 around the price range. Not only are they new and in new condition, but they will be supported longer, draw less power, be cooler, have much more vram (the 690 has 2gb of vram because it's in sli), and perform better in more games because of sli scaling or support.

A 690 is two 680s in SLI. Either way, I agree, it's a bad choice.

Save that $200 sell your R9 285 then buy new GTX1060 or RX480 for better performance and no SLI issues.

Its a dual GPU card made out of 2x 680's

Looking at the majority of the thread, I'm guessing that saving up a bit or selling my R9 285 and buying a RX 480 or GTX 1060 is the best option then?

Avoid the 3GB version it is not a true 1060... Get RX 470, 480 or the 6GB 1060.

Yea, I heard about how Nvidia changed slight things on the 3GB version, I'll either be buying RX480 and hopefully buying another one for crossfire later on, or just a GTX 1060.

yeah nvidia pulled off a dick move...they disabled 2 SMX units on the 3GB card so it has 128 less cuda cores (-11.1%)...it's a GTX 1050ti...not a GTX 1060...but nvidia figured a GTX 1060 3GB GDDR5 would sell better at a higher price vs. a GTX 1050ti 3GB

In my opinion, they should've called the GTX 1060 3gb, just GTX 1060, and the 6gb, GTX 1060Ti.

i guess they wanted to leave that spot open in case AMD would come up with something there...they could take the GP104 of the GTX 1070/1080 and cut it back some more and make it the 1060ti...

Well, the thing is that, the GTX 1060 3gb version isn't a retaliation to AMD's RX, since if they wanted to do this, it'd have to be at least planned months ahead. I think it's more on them wanting more market share, and being really competitive at a $200 range.
