What happened to analog volume dials?

So my second car has nicer radio than my other one about the same age, both the units that came with the car. But my second one's volume dial is digital- and by that I mean it's a knob that turns infinitely either direction and when the radio is on controls the volume digitally. The other car is an analog one- directly wired to the potentiometer in the dial. 

Why is this important? 

You can turn the dial when the radio is off! 

Even with ones that allow you to turn the radio unit off by pushing it in, you will have to have it blast your ears off for a second when you turn the radio on and adjust it. 

What happened to that? 

What happened to that nice satisfying wiper and click on volume dials? This isn't just cars, it's regular radios too. 

I can't "turn it up and rip the knob off" anymore!

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I was about to comment how my car still has them then I realized my car is from 1998... I agree all the touch screen jazz gets shmudgy and broken.

My radio has no dials at all and its from nearly 20 years ago.

 

My amp has a softstart power on (meaning that it takes a couple seconds to turn on so it doesn't draw shitloads of power) and I use this period of time to adjust the volume if needbe.

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I recently discovered that my Car Stereo actually has a "max starting volume" setting. As in, when you turn the car on, the volume will never exceed a specified setting, and if you had the volume higher then that setting when last using it, it'll automatically reduce the volume to reach that setting.

 

It's quite handy, actually. I've set the max starting volume to around 1/5th total volume (I normally don't exceed 40% volume, which is already pretty loud - occasionally reach 50-60% if I'm blaring it on a long highway trip).

 

Normally, I'd agree with you - it was actually super annoying in my car when I forgot the volume too loud - until I discovered this feature! My car is a 2014 Jetta (I bought it new), and I literally only stumbled upon the setting like 6 weeks ago. My fiancee wanted to fiddle with the equalizer a bit, and we came across it in the Audio settings on the Stereo.

Needless to say, I didn't keep that one long. 

Mine has two large buttons that sit out from the bottom ledge and are super easy to reach from the shifter knob without taking my hand off of it. I actually prefer it.

It does have a very similar body shape as the Jetta. I wonder if they use the same chassis. I have the factory upgraded radio w/ Bluetooth (but not a touch screen interface or GPS nav)

Yeah my car is digital too. I only listen to music via aux cord so I tend to start my car first, adjust volume, then play from phone. I listen to music at very loud volumes when I drive so I know to always check getting in but I turn it up almost immediately afterwards but I have to ease into it. My parents don't know how the buttons work to change inputs, only that by removing aux, the radio plays automatically then they yell at me for going deaf.

Most modern cars will have a setting in the Radio to limit startup volume anyway - mine does, and a Jetta isn't exactly super high end.

I don't like steering wheel controls believe it or not, but I see why people do, and yah that makes sense. They'd both have to be digital

I don't think I've ever been in a car like this.

 

I remember when I was a child, my parents had a Vauxhall Vectra, that had an infinite knob. After that we had two hatchbacks, one of them had buttons and the other had another digital one. The car I have has buttons on the steering wheel and controls on the centre console.

 

I guess I'm just used to turning the volume down when it's too loud. Then again, the loudest I usually have it is 11/100 (because I find it difficult to focus on when to change gears when it's too loud, my car doesn't have a rev gauge) so it doesn't affect me much.
