K or non-K CPUs

Is it actually worth it to get an unlocked CPU? It seems like locked processors is where the bang for the buck is at...

Eg. for nearly the same price you can either get

1. i5 unlocked + z-series mobo + high end cooler

2. i7 locked + h-series mobo + 212evo

I believe that the i7 locked will still outperform the i5 unlocked in most cases as well...

Especially in my country where the price premium for the K-series CPUs and z-series mobos are like a good 40% above their locked counterparts

Thoughts on unlocked processors?

The BBQ: i7-4770 / 212x / Tri-X R9 290x 1075/1400 / MSI H87-G43 GAMING / EVGA G2 850W / Corsair Spec 03 / Samsung 840 EVO 250gb SSD / Toshiba 2TB HDD / 8gb Kingston DDR3 1600mhz

An overclocked i5 should outperform a non K i7 in games. Premium is there my fried, it has always been like that. But the locked processors should be ok now for gaming and the H170/B150 chipset is good enough for stability :).

The extra cost is for a bigger e-peen ;)

You can see that a stock i7 6700k (basically a locked i7 then) is = to i5 6600k at 4.5ghz

6700k is clocked higher than a 6700 even at stock, they are not the exact same thing.

what happened to the machine with the i7-4770 in your signature?

i7 6700: 3.4 GHz base, 4.0 Ghz boost

i7 6700K: 4.0 Ghz Base, 4.2 Ghz Boost.

That is a massive difference amigo :P as stock CPUs do not always boost to their highest clocks.

Furthermore, the i7 6700 has a 65 W thermal design which means it will stop boosting much earlier than the i7 6700k which has ~91W TDP

There is a big value associated with the K my friend :)

Hmmm.. Fair point. But at boost (usually the cpu operates with turbo boost 100% of the time anyways) there's only a 200mhz diff... Is that alot?

Nothing! Im using it :) just curious on whether the unlocked cpus are worth it

200mhz is massive? :o Would you pay 40% more just to get the overclockability?

Wait isnt TDP how much heat it produces? Then shouldnt the 6700 have a larger headroom with a smaller TDP?

both these cpu's aren't worthy upgrade to the 4770 that's for sure...as far as an unlocked core i5 versus a locked core i7...both have pros and cons...the core i5 with an overclock will have greater single-threaded performance which most games tend to react the best to...the core i7 will have better thread management and overall slightly better multi-threaded performance which will help boost performance in multi-threaded applications and SOME newer modern demanding games...overall both are good, but none of these are perfect...an unlocked core i7 is the one your should shoot for...but your current CPU is still perfectly fine i would hold on to it for 1 or 2 more years...let new faster stuff come out and wait till you need more CPU horsepower...if you want to improve your gaming experience, spend the money on a better monitor or a faster GPU instead.

Not saying 200 mhz is massive. I am saying that the CPU will spend most of it's time sitting around 3.4-3.7 Ghz on load to stay withing power limits (65W) whereas the k cpu has much more headroom to boost further before hitting power limit so will be most likely hanging around the 4.2 mark :)

True... I was thinking that the 4770 will last me atleast 2 more gpu upgrades before i replace it... The windows transferring issue btwn motherboards for windows 10 is still unknown to me (idk how to do it xD)

Im planning to sit on 1080p till 4k becomes the norm! So the u2414h is gonna be my buddy for awhile :)

Ah TDP is the limit! It isnt a measurement of how much heat it produces underload xD

My 4770 usually boost to it's turbo boost speeds all of the time tho... and it does operate pretty hot under load (65c~)

So i always thought that locked CPUs always operates at it's turbo speeds

The CPU is only rated for it's base clock, anything over that is an overclock and is not guaranteed. The turbo speeds only occur if the CPU is within thermal and power limits otherwise it will downclock itself to meet those limits :)

And you have to remember that turbo boost works by overclocking lower number of cores not all of them all the time.

so lets say 1 core in the 6700 hits 4.0

2 cores ~3.9

3 cores~3.7

4 cores ~3.6

if your CPU hit the boost clock on all threads while under heavy load you probably activated something in your bios to force it to run that way...which is GOOD cause that mean you are getting the best performance possible out of it...so long as the temps are in check and you don't care about a slightly higher power consumption...then it's all good...did you hit MSI OC genie or something like that? this would make the CPU run at the max clock.

head to your BIOS, hit the OC genie button at the top...let it do it's magic...save the profile and load windows...put a load on all cores/threads and see how far it boost...if it's better use this profile...if it's not better than it was before head back to the BIOS and load your older profile....simple as that :)

Try downloading intel Xtreme tuning utility and have a tinker in there. I got an extra 400 Mhz out of my alienware 18 laptop's i7 4800mq back in the day by playing around with the settings.

But be careful and do not try anything you are not comfortable with :)
