[SOLVED] At What Point Can The CPU Become The Bottleneck?

Good evening. I'd never think about building a PC with these specs. This is just a hypothetical thought.

 

Say if I got an Intel i7 6700K for my CPU, and two GTX Titan X Pascals in sli. Would the CPU be able to feed enough information to both cards? Is it even possibly to have this CPU be a bottleneck to any of the cards in the market right now? How can you even tell?

CPU is not a "bottleneck" because two titan Xs will still perform better than one, but the CPU is always a factor in performance, that's why a 6700K gets more fps than a 4790k, and a 4790k gets more fps than a 3770k, etc...

 

So technically the next 7700k will perform even better than the 6700k, but the 6700k will not be a literal bottleneck.

 

For now, the 6700k is the BEST option for gaming CPU, so there really isn't anything you can do to improve your FPS more other than wait for the future 7700k.

Since one GTX 1070 gets bottled by a i5-6600K then we can ASSume there would be a bottleneck on some games, no matter what... :) (I will still hardly call it unplayable I bet you will see above 60fps on all games that are not BROKEN...)

Bottlenecks occur when the CPU cannot provide the GPU with what it needs in time for the next frame to be rendered. This results in lowered FPS, higher frame times, and stuttering.

 

This can occur if the CPU does not have enough logical cores, or if it has too low of a clock speed, or in rarer cases if it lacks certain instructions used by the game engine to improve performance.

 

SLI Titan X would probably be bottlenecked by the 6700K. However, there isn't currently a better CPU available for gaming.

To add to this, one can also force a CPU bottleneck by running at lower resolutions, increasing the amount of frames that need to be rendered for the GPU, resulting in the CPU being unable to feed the GPU. You can also go the opposite direction, and reverse the bottleneck by running higher resolutions, lowering the amount of frames that need to be rendered, which puts heavy lifting on the GPU's shoulders. 

 

Anyone that runs SLI Titan Pascals need not worry about the CPU. It's their monitor that will be the potential bottleneck, lol.
