Another PSU question...

Go to solution Solved by DioOmicida,

I've used this formula for a while: Power draw of the CPU + GPU + 150.
The extra 150 allows for the small draw from everything else plus OC room.
But if you have the budget for both, the 650 wouldn't hurt.

I would go with wattage over efficiency.... (For more headroom)  but that's me.....

It's up to you, do you want efficiency or wattage? Pick your poison.

Valid point, some PSUs don't always adhere completely to their 80+ rating they could be pretty damn close to the next tier but aren't quite there.

Like the EVGA 1600W G2... It offers platinum efficiency, even though it is gold rated...

If you have the money to get a 550w G2, I wouldn't get a M12II 620 EVO that's based on a old group-regulated design from 5 years ago.

The Johnny Guru review of the M12II was positive... This is the reason why I recommended it....

Yes, the M12II 620 Evo is a good budget unit. Never said it wasn't. What I was saying that, due to the cost of the M12II Evo, you could get the 550 G2 for $10 more, and it will be a superior high-end unit that will offer much better electrical performance, efficiency, lower audible noise, and a longer 7 year warranty.

@Thread212 @Starelementpoke @PCGuy_5960 @DioOmicida all of your posts were helpful. But I think that @DioOmicida's was the best. I'll probably get the 650W G2.

I'm sure @STRMfrmXMN would probably say that the 550W is still plenty for this build but a little extra room isn't too bad. It's not like I'm pairing a 200W system draw with like a 1300W PSU.

Even though I know the PC Part Picker wattage calculator isn't much to go by, but it says that at idle the PC should run about 106W which would be 16% load on a 650W PSU if it was running at the full estimated amount of 437W puts it at 67% load.

For a 550W PSU, idle would be about 19% and load would be 79%, so I'm not sure if maybe I should get the 650W instead to have a bit more headroom for some OCing or if the 550W would have enough headroom for OCing. I guess vagueness doesn't help, I'm talking about the EVGA SuperNova G2 550W and 650W

For reference here's the build I'm planning

That system will never see more than 250W under load. You'd be fine with a 550W.

Since the RX480 overclocks so poorly you won't see a lot of power draw.

Nitro+ is above the stock speeds it draws more than the reference card.

But the voltage is still locked at a fairly low draw. Nonetheless, 550W would power two in Crossfire.
