Another PSU question...

handymanshandle
Go to solution Solved by DioOmicida,

I've used this formula for a while: Power draw of the CPU + GPU + 150.
The extra 150 allows for the small draw from everything else plus OC room.
But if you have the budget for both, the 650 wouldn't hurt.

Even though I know the PC Part Picker wattage calculator isn't much to go by, but it says that at idle the PC should run about 106W which would be 16% load on a 650W PSU if it was running at the full estimated amount of 437W puts it at 67% load.

For a 550W PSU, idle would be about 19% and load would be 79%, so I'm not sure if maybe I should get the 650W instead to have a bit more headroom for some OCing or if the 550W would have enough headroom for OCing. I guess vagueness doesn't help, I'm talking about the EVGA SuperNova G2 550W and 650W

For reference here's the build I'm planning

You'd be fine with a 550Wat PSU.

Well if thats the case..
Its actually safe to get 550 watt psu.
but just in case you want to upgrade your pc in the future with a part that have more power consumption then get the 650W..
Because u dont want to upgrade both Whatever part u want to upgrade and the PSU.
Though technology often to get more efficient time to time.. but we dont know.

my suggestion get the 650W just in case.

Yeah I suppose.

Ah okay, well there's really only about a $10 difference

True, I would still be fine with a 550W PSU but having a bit extra headroom could always be good. Though if I were to do a 2 way CF with the 480, I'd probably want to get a bigger PSU anyways. So idk.

I would recommend the Seasonic M12II 620W or the S12II variant if you don't care about modular cables... You have more headroom and these PSUs are top notch and rock solid!

Your call. Usually better to get just a single more powerful card over 2 weaker ones, so yeah.

True, I'd probably be better off spending a bit more to get something in the xx70 range from Nvidia rather than adding in another card.

Or the 490 or whatever when it comes out when you upgrade.

Well at least not that much of a difference I'd say. I mean it's not like a $1 to $5 difference but kinda noticeable.

There are PSUs that out perform seasonic PSUs easily, (IE a EVGA T2 or etc.) they just haven't released a PSU that wasn't a bad buy. They aren't necessarily the best, but they're an extremely safe choice.

Granted it's 80+ Bronze rather than 80+ Gold so it's a little less efficient at 20%, 50% and 100% loads but it is a fair bit cheaper and still has the overhead that I was kinda wanting.

True, not sure about their warranties but I suppose if it's that solid maybe it doesn't need a 7 year warranty like the G2 from EVGA.

Not saying they aren't. But that value is highly dependent on the ever fluctuating price of PSUs, and the country you're in.

Eh, never hurts. It'd recommend the 650W EVGA GQ, but it's unfortunately no longer at it's $69.99 price point.

$70 from Newegg for the M12II 620W which the only trade offs might be shorter warranty and 80+ Bronze. But Idk 80+ Gold might be more worth it.

It's a 5% difference at best... Not worth it (in my opinion anyways)

You could go in the middle and get the GQ. I believe it's hovering around the $75 range right now. Not the best value, but still quite good.

You might as well go with the Gold. It'd save you a chunk of money in power in the long run anyway.

It's PSU dependent.... A PSU that is 80+ Bronze might be 84% efficient and an 80+ Gold might be 89%... These are the minimums....

Valid point, some PSUs don't always adhere completely to their 80+ rating they could be pretty damn close to the next tier but aren't quite there.
