That is a very good power supply.

Like literally shot out flames?

Seasonic is one of the most reputable psu makers, I would suggest you RMA it.

I was playing Assassins creed syndicate, the frame rate suddenly went really low then my computer blue screened, and i could smell plastic and some weird other smell, then i saw smoke and the fan was on fire caused by something that exploded.

I also dont think i can return it because i have had it from a 3rd hand owner, i never got it new.

Well, it depends when he bought the PSU.

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

Considering the age of the processor, it could have been at any time after 2012.

As for the state of the remainder of the components, it's possible that everything else didn't take any damage but I would suggest giving everything the once over to see if there are any damaged, burnt or exploded components.

I had a similar thing happen a while back with a cheapo chinese PSU. It blew a large capacitor (this was during the 2006-2008 cap plague). Made a pretty spectacular bang, & shorted out my mains 15A fuse. Produced a pretty big flash and smoke too. However my components where still intact so you MIGHT get lucky. However the drop in FPS suggests a large ripple to your +12v GPU rail which spells bad news for components.

Well i am hopeful that nothing is damaged from it. I managed to isolate the small fire and it went out pretty fast once unplugged - touch wood.

Any of the corsair psus should be fine except the cx series with the green label.

This is why I don't do secondhand PSUs. You don't know if they were hardly ever turned on, if they were cleaned regularly or if they were running a mining rig in an enclosed cabinet, choking on their own exhaust for a year or two.

You definitely need a new PSU. Like, a new PSU, not just one that you've never used before. I'd go step by step with it. Find a suitable replacement PSU, then disconnect everything but the CPU, RAM and mouse/keyboard, plug the display right into the mobo, then power it up and let it run for a while. Do some moderately demanding stuff and see how it handles. Hell, stress test it if you want. Anything to make sure that the system is stable at stock speeds and voltage before moving on. Lather, rinse, repeat with the GPU plugged back in. If there is something hopelessly fried on the motherboard, the last thing you want to do is risk damaging the GPU.

Or the VS series. Avoid the VS series lol

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Fanboys and haters are pretty common, but trolls get banned quickly. And the new CX series isn't bad. Hell, the old one isn't awful. I don't agree with going with it for a high-end rig, but don't harass people to replace it when they already have it, you know?

At first its like wtf just happened. Then the smell and then the panic to rip the panels off. Try to rma all the damaged parts the worst they can do is deny it right?

I honestly should harass them, better replace it for $90 then just lose money, but hey its there choice

For office builds its a great choice, for high end rigs just don't use it

Yeah i can try. The RX 480 i can send back if it is broken, i will just say my PSU blew out and i will tell them the brand and model of it.

Don't be a dick. Plus it handles high end builds just fine. It isn't the best, but it's not likely to burst into flame.
