I just got the craziest idea - Ice block watercooling

As the title says, this is just a dumb idea and probably not something that's even remotely possible but here we go.

 

Mineral oil! It's not conductive right?

So what If you had something powerful enough to freeze the oil (freezing point -10c) while you have a submerged computer inside?

Would this work even work, or is it the same problem as running a computer in a fridge? Because I'm not saying that this "something" that freezes the oil has to be enclosed.

 

I think it would look really cool(no pun intended).

I dont think it would work. When you get that extreme cold, things can and do become brittle and fragile. Also you run the risk of actual water condensation on the board as it is cooling down and freezing.

Ontop of what Legacy99 has said, when a material freezes / unfreezes it's density and volume changes, and this could damage fragile components.

The only way to use a solid to cool is with dry ice that is crushed with some type of alcohol so it doesn't freeze

You would have to leave it a bit of space to change volume but the better question would probably be how would you keep the thing frozen? Or if something melts withing the frozen area and it freezes again how to get rid of the volume problem then?

Maybe if you designed special coolers for that purpose.

The problem is that the vareous heatsinks in your system would heat the oil "ice block" from the inside, and your cooling solution is on the outside. So by freezing the oil you actually reduce the efficiency of the system greatly.

 

The great advantage of any liquid based cooling is that the heat can "flow" along with the liquid.

 

What you're suggesting isnt better than machining out a block of copper that touches all components, and putting a fan next to it.

With this mold you introduce a thermal blockade between your components and the ice.....

I never said it would be efficient ^^ The ice block is there to look cool, not provide cool I guess.

But what if you had a watercooling system inside that worked just like it would in a normal case?

Heat wouldn't be able to escape... your card would over heat. Like when arctic animals sleep in the snow. its to retain heat. So the card would overheat and likely melt the surrounding, yet no conductive ice... but then you run into expansion and shrinkage of ice that would fracture the board/card.


I like the idea though :)  I think it has potential.

Perhaps a plexiglass case inside a tank of water, then allow the water to freeze. Make sure the inner cage with the components has a drainage in the case of condensation. The parts should stay dry and the ice would keep the inner glass at a cool temp. Just dont see it being as effective as water cooling.

A personal anecdote comes to mind. I was at kindergarten when a really hungry girl couldn't wait for the food to get ready. So she took a straw and went to blow bubbles in the soup so that it would boil faster. 

 

You're thinking that the fact that the coolant solidifies is better because cool things solidify and cool is good.

 

But that's not how coolingloops works. Think about it. The heat is transferred into the coolant making the heat source cooler and the heated coolant is then physically moved further away and cooler coolant is then brought next to the heat source which has heated back up and more heat is transferred to the coolant. Meanwhile elsewhere the hot coolant is cooled down so that it can be safely sent for a new round.

The coolant has to be fluid for this type of cooling loop to work. Either a liquid or gas.

 

Cooling with solid materials like dry ice is based on the fact that the material dissipates away taking the heat with it. But it never comes back so more blocks of dry ice have to be added.

I would say don't try to freeze it.  If it can't flow, how's the heat supposed to move around?  Chilled mineral oil would be more preferable.

There's something cool here - you just can't see it.

But what if you had a watercooling system inside that worked just like it would in a normal case? 

:D Please never stop dreaming. Let other people tell you of the pitfalls in your ideas. It's a free and easy way to get clarity on things and shed light on issues you yourself might be blind to. But never take it as a personal insult. Even if some people mean it as such. Get every idea out there and fear nothing. Don't fear it being stupid. Don't fear it being already invented. Don't fear being laughed at or shunned. Those people aren't worth your ideas anyway. I'd be willing to bet you'll end up being both successful and happy but happy the very least.
