What's the worst that could happen...

If I put a potentially shorted out CPU into my motherboard? This may sound like a silly question, but I'm trying to figure out if this CPU is working, but I don't want to risk damaging other components by seating it in my mobo and potentially shorting anything on the mobo, GPU, etc.

I guess I would want to know why that CPU might be shorted out before I install it on a motherboard that I don't want to lose.

Damn ok...it really makes it hard to narrow down which part is faulty when testing it risks breaking other components. Thanks.
