To my knowledge, the only thing that has been shown is that compulsive gamers and drug addicts exhibit similar brain patterns. And yes, the key word here is COMPULSIVE. Non of these studies conflate COMPULSIVE gaming with just regular gaming as a hobby.

the deal with "compulsive" is that these are people who need gaming to feel good, just like drug addicts need drugs to feel good, alcohol addicts need alcohol, and probably the most comparable one: smoking addicts.

the majority of people who play games can pick up a game, play it for a while, set the game down after they had their share of joy from it, then go outside with friends and have the same kind of joy. people who are addicted cannot have that joy, because theyr brain NEEDS that rush they get from the thing they're addicted to in order to "enjoy".

this is what those addiciton clinics do: they keep you away from that which you are addicted to, and make you do other things that you can "enjoy" until you snap out of that desire for that which you are addicted to. there's people who smoke a cigarette every so often to cope with stress, just like there's people who smoke a single joint at a party, and then dont bother for the rest of the year. addiction happens when you can no longer say no, and HAVE to have it, making everything else seem dull and boring.

--

just because *someone* seems to need clarification i'm not talking from my ass: this is pieced together from seeing a friend's family get torn up by his mom's alcohol addiction and his dad's gaming addiction (and i'm talking a level of addiction where he called in sick to work so he can play WoW), being surrounded by both chainsmokers, the "occasional" smokers, and people who stopped, and stopped in a way they can deal with being surrounded by cigarette smoke.

i have had several gaming sessions last for more than 24 hours straight, but at no point was i in a spot where i NEEDED to continue, its just than when you are unable to sleep due to medical reason one's gotta do something, and going outside isnt the best of ideas when hallucinating.

It's said that gamers who mostly play fps are better surgeons compared to non gamers. Reason is they have quicker reaction to their surroundings. Say neurosurgeon doing a brain operation. When there is a bleeding in one of the areas, he will spot it much quicker compare to others. Just like a target in a fps game.

Stupidity, try not to show it too much?

You're the only one displaying the stupidity of not even being able to read and comprehend whatever you link from google:

'Right now though, we don't know whether years of playing video games have caused these changes, or whether these differences in the brain's internal wiring came first and then led to the participants being drawn towards gaming.'
