Some questions about a REALLY old PC

MoonlightSylv

I have a bunch of old computers in my garage but one stands out, a lot.

It uses SIMMs for RAM instead of DIMMs, it has an original Pentium CPU, the motherboard looks really weird, and the power supply has a plug in and an outlet.

Wtf is the outlet for?

So what should I do with it?

The outlet is maybe for a monitor? Donate it to a museum

My guess is that you are referring to the 5 pin DIN connector, its for a keyboard, this was used before ps/2.

Edit: Nevermind, the outlet connector on the power supply is for powering a monitor, something that I wish was still around today.

No it's literally an inverted PSU plug.

My internet is like 1mbps or less (literally) so that took about 10 minutes to upload.

Back in the day, we used that inverted power plug to connect our monitors, the PSU cuts completely the power when you flip the switch, that way you can turn the PC and the monitor on with a single switch.

This is the cable that uses to connect the monitor.

Dude, i have some of my dad's old pcs, and one is just like this, but older. No motherboard I/o, all in the pci slots. And the weird plugs. Runs red hat fedora Linux. Also, I have tons of old chips CPUs and ram and a pentium. Maybe I'll post about them!

i5 6600k and GTX 1070 but I play 1600-900. 1440p BABY!

Still, don't put too much faith in my buying decisions. xD

It's been so long I seen something like this I simply forgot what it was for... Good thing others do remember. :)

Looks like it's for powering a monitor. Would need a weird female (or would it be considered male?) power cable though. Haven't seen many of them lately.

If you don't find something  to do with the pc you could send it to me! Would be a sweet collectors item.

OK Here we go:

  • The black expansion slots are called 16-pin ISA slots. These came before even PCI
  • There shouldn't really be any rear I/O on the board because back in the day of the original Pentium, you were expected to buy your own expansion cards for ALL your I/O including graphics and sound.

Before PCI, every PC used VLBus graphics cards such as a Cirrus Logic 512k-1MB graphics which supported up to 1024x800.

As far as expansion cards onboard AC97 audio launched on AGP based Pentium II machines, my parents went from a 486 to an early Pentium II(PCI only) and we had to get a Soundblaster AWE-64 B|

When it comes to old hardware I still kept a 3Dfx Voodoo 3 3000 and the intact box xD

Vesa local bus was introduced on the 486 platform, before that there was ISA, even for graphics.

VLB was a quick flawed solution to get faster graphics on pc at a time GUI's were becoming more popular and the ISA bus was lacking. It is nothing more then the actual 486 processor bus itself put on a slot to connect the gfx card.

As a result is wasn't a very stable bus, very much tied to the 486 itself, but it bought time until PCI was introduced.
