GTX 770 SLI? Or just get a GTX 1070?

Johnmakuta

I currently have a PNY GTX 770 Signature Edition 2gb and I've been planning to upgrade for a while but the GTX 1080 is rather expensive currently. I game at 1440p and play games like Skyrim (with a shit ton of mods), Witcher 3 (want to run at high settings), Doom (can't run well right now), Ashes of the Singularity, etc. I tend to play older games (I literally just got Portal 1) at ultra high settings and high resolution. If I get the 770 now I'll upgrade to the 1080 or 1080ti when it comes out but the price difference between a 770 and a 1070 is about $300 which will go to games and other system upgrades.

to get to the point, will dual 770s be able to run games (like the Witcher 3) on ultra settings at 2k? I'm more worried about the vram limit than I am the power of the cards. Keep in mind that I will get a 1080 or 1070 within 3-5 months if I get the 770.

A 1070 definitely beats 770 SLI, so you should go with the 1070.

I know that and that's why I plan on buying one, eventually. I'm more concerned with will dual 770s run Witcher 3 ultra settings at 1440p? I want the 1080 to come down to about $550-600 before I'll fully replace my card.

If you find a 770 for a low price on Craigslist or eBay, go for it. Just don't spend more than 100.

I really don't think you're going to get dual 770s to run Witcher 3 ultra settings at 1440p. That's really a job for a 1080 or a 1070. Dual 770s might be able to accomplish Witcher 3 at medium settings at 1080p, and that's being slightly generous.

IIRC Skyrim can't even take advantage of SLI. Go for the 1070, especially considering that Skyrim benefits tremendously from a lot of VRAM if you use texture mods.

Skyrim has a hard VRAM limit of 3.1GB.

2GB modded skyrim is not enough. A GTX 980ti is plenty headroom for skyrim(unless you deiced to use 4k textures for everything + grass mod + ENB lol)

It's common knowledge.

At 1080p I don't think you'll ever go over 2GB at 1080p in Witcher 3. My 970 doesn't, though I never have hairworks on.
