Hi, so i have a Toshiba qosmio x70-a laptop, but it has a problem like all laptops, overheating...

I was thinking in turning this laptop into a desktop, but im not sure if this is the best ideia.

I've never done something like this and i dont want to ruin it xD

Any advice on how to turn it into a desktop or ideias ?

all laptops? No, not really. Only Acer/Toshiba/Razer have that. The others are mostly fine.

As for your question, why do you insist on breaking it? Clean it, get a cooling pad and hope that works. If it doesn't, sell it and get a real laptop

If you do That because you like the project,go for it.

it is just a lot of work when you can actieve the same using a cooling Dock

It also won't change anything if the cooling solution is not good enough to handle the components

You could also house somthing like this

Those are useless. Trust me, Buying Arctic Silver V and cleaning the laptop gives better results than that POS

Haven't watched the video but turning old laptops into "desktop" isn't a new idea, or a bad idea. It gives a "second" life to a piece of tech that would've likely went to the garbage.

Like @don_svetlio said, try cleaning out the laptop first, dismantle it, clean the heatsinks, put new thermal paste (a good one, not the cheap $2 generic stuff) and get a cooling pad.

You could also try underclocking and undervolting it a little, the performance hit will be minimal but it will help with keeping the heat down.

Get some air duster into those vents and change out the thermal paste. But even then, it's not uncommon for laptops depending on when they were from to sit at 40-50C idle and work up to 90C. It's only when they actually shut down due to overheating is when you have a problem. If it's really hot but still going, you don't have a problem (well, sort of)

That's why I proposed underclocking and undervolting it. Sadly, in the long run that thing will always overheat.

if you're turning it into anything a wall mounted set up would be the best idea.

The laptop to desktop is almost 100% guaranteed to not work, and the fact that you saw someone on YouTube do it means exactly nothing. Honestly, if it's overheating, all I can tell you is to buy a different laptop or buy a desktop. The odds of you not ruining the laptop by turning it into desktop are much lower than vice versa, and if you do ruin it, you will have to buy a new one anyway. Not to mention, if you DO turn it into a desktop, you now have to buy a monitor, keyboard and mouse. You have to buy a case, you have to do heavy modding to the case in order to fit whatever custom motherboard is in your laptop. I/O is all kinds of challenging, and even if you don't screw all that up, you still can't put in a graphics card, and you're stuck with whatever crappy stock cooler was already on your CPU because custom laptop shapes and sizes have different requirements and so they all have different mounts for coolers. There's about 3-4 if you're particularly lucky) things you can upgrade on a laptop: RAM, hard drive, thermal compound, and on most of the laptops I've encountered you can switch the CPU but that's probably not present on all of them. If you own an Apple laptop, you're essentially screwed. This is in contrast to desktops, where literally ever component is upgradable as long as you don't buy a low-end prebuilt.

I will most likely not respond to you in a thread unless you quote me.

I don't even think that's possible since those options usually aren't available in an OEM's BIOS

There's no black magic in this world that can turn a laptop into a desktop

If it's overheating look for a good laptop cooler, also avoid gaming for too long, laptop parts aren't as resilient as desktop parts

moved to modding section.  Let us know if you manage to turn your laptop into a desktop :)

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Both Toshiba Qosmio X70 and x75 can be undervolted though Intel XTU.

I would recommend just to disassemble the laptop and clean out it's fans, reapply thermal paste, buy a cooling pad and/or This. I have an old HP G62 and it used to overheat a lot and the problem was solved by doing what I described above.
