routers Wireless Router Help

Hello Linus Community :D,

 

Aight so we used to have a router/modem combo thingy from our old ISP but then we switched to a newer an faster ISP and the modem/router combo thingy died. I had a friend send me an older Linksys WRT54 Router and it died so here we are now 2016, and my parents bought a https://www.netgear.com/support/product/WNDR3400v3 and now this has died too.. had it less than a year or so? Netgear didnt help much said they wanted like $30 to exchange it or something bs idk so yeah.. $80 router down the drain.

We live in the Northern California area where it can easily reach 108-118 with anywhere from 0 to 20ish % humidity? so it can get pretty hot n such only in the summer time but still.. Summer time I feel is the bane of our troubles because it gets so hot.

I'm looking for a new router that doesn't cost an arm and a leg ~$100 MAYBE a few dollars more +/- just depends I guess. Anyone got ideas or feedback? Just tired of going through routers like they are candy.

We have a lot of devices that are connected... PlayStation, Wii, 3 Phones, 2 Tablets, our TV is a Smart TV so it has wireless connection as well and maybe some other devices here n there when family come over or a few friends etc.. total im thinking 12 devices max? but that's at the worst times. Majority of the time it's just the main devices I listed above.

The ones that are connected 24/7 are the phones, tablets and TV.

Lemme know if anymore information is need.. I'm really wanting a good router but just seems anything under $100 is trash and will just die on me in a year or so. Thanks for reading my eye bleeding post =/ I try to format stuff and make it look nicer than 1 big paragraph or wall of text, hope to having some feedback

Linus has a video (or two) where he talks about how most consumer routers are really poor.  He tried this commercial grade access point that I think would work great in your situation... problem is the price.  IF you really don't want to fork out hundreds or dollars, I think you will remain limited to what you can get in the "consumer" range, which includes your linsyses and so on

Yeah that's what I'm starting to think myself.. =/

You can build your own solution for <$100 if you have some older hardware laying aorund. Going for a LP Xeon is overkill. Mine runs on a Pentium G3220 and its fine.

I can't imagine that'd stack up against anything you could buy for the same money though.  Have you tried other routers to compare your to?
