So even a 920 is still fast enough to not significantly bottleneck a 980 SLI. Interesting.

Indeed very interesting...

If you wanted to go cheap, XEON E5640 is the 32nm 12MB L3 version of this chip, but is significantly binned better and uses way less power, also runs cooler.

It was OCed. 4.4Ghz

still an X5650 Xeon would easily hit 4.4Ghz on all 6 cores 12 threads and also cost only $60 and best part is that it will work on the X58 motherboard nativity without no cut motherboard socket and make a custom bios kind of bs

Just saying that i don't see any CPU bottlenecking at 4.4Ghz regardless of age.

yes you can buy those chips for as low as $15 and its an OCing GOD on the X58 motherboard. though if you already have an i7 920 why get an e5640 when both chips perform nearly the same even when oced the only differnce is the xeon is binned higher, uses less volts and has a lower tdp

All first gen XEON's will easily go over 4ghz, they usually top out around 4.4ghz, the best going even up to 5ghz.

youd be suprised, im a big believer in the LGA 775 and LGA 1366 platform since both offer serious price to performance if you know which CPU and board to pick on them

yeah my older LGA 771 X5460 hits 4.0GHz and can go much higher but my PSU, memory, and cooling solution are holding me back. still if you ever want to upgrade the CPU id say get an X5650 and OC that thing sky high on all its 6 true cores. at stock speed the CPU is already a god.

I don't find this very surprising. Synthetic benchmarks (unless you used an in-game path) usually know how to fully utilize both parts for best results.

I had the same with my lone GTX 970 when I ran my Xeon X5450 at 4.5GHz (it was unstable AF however due to heat-should have gone with the E5450 as its rated for 80W not 120). No bottlenecking at all.

i had a dual xeon x5650 setup and i played BF4 and GTA V on it on ultra without any bottlenecking. (unfortunately GTA V only supports 1 CPU) but still the second CPU was used to do lossless recording so beast of a computer.

Well that's kind of the main point with Xeons, its very easy to judge before hand whether or not it will be a good overclocker. (My X5450 for example being the C0 stepping isn't, as well as not being the higher binned E variant)

Just to make this clear, AMD FX cannot even cope that well with 1 970.

Oh god, don't make me have to do a comparison with my Pentium 4 631 and 516.
