Should I get an RX 480 or GTX 1060?

Hi there!

So I'm thinking of upgrading my GTX 660 for either an RX 480 or a GTX 1060, with aftermarket cooling solutions of course. The problem is that I'm not sure of which one to get. I have some concerns and I'm hoping you fine gentlemen could help clear some of that up for me. I have seen some complaints about the 480 drawing too much power from the motherboard and causing the entire system to shut down. Science Studio did a video on this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhjC_8ai7QA I am also concerned as these cards have PCI-E 3.0 ports and my motherboard is only PCI-E 2.0. I'm also concerned about which one will be better for current and upcoming titles as as far as I'm aware, AMD has better optimisation for DX12 so I would like to know which card is better in the long run. And I'm aware that we're yet to get benchmarks for the 1060, but basing it off of it's price, what kind of performance could I expect to get from it? 980 Ti levels? Here are my specs:

MB: GA-990XA-UD3

CPU: AMD FX-8350 (w/ Arctic Freezer 13 cooler)

GPU: GTX 660 2GB

RAM: 8GB

PSU: Integrator 600W

Thanks for your help guys!

Can't tell you a definite answer since the 1060 isn't out yet but considering the rumours around the 1060 I would recommend the 1060

Other way around. The CPU will bottleneck the GPU. Not quite sure if it will though...

We dont know anything about the performance of the 1060. The rumors dont make any  sense either (How can Nvidia sell 980 level performance for $200 and expect people to buy the 1070 or 1080 when they cost insanly more money, almost double or tripple, for moderate performance increases.......if its true then its a sure fire way to lose money)

Just wait for the benchmarks.

I'm planing on getting the GTX-1060 myself the extra 50 buck you spend will be worth the performance and power efficiency over the RX 480.

PCIe 2.0x16 means that your card will effectively run at PCIe 3.0 x8. that's more than enough lanes for a 480, or 1060, or pretty much any other GPU on the market.

Your CPU is unlikely to bottleneck those cards as they are weak. even though its an older CPU, 8 threads at anything above 3GHz is plenty for something as weak as these cards.

As for the decision to go 480 or 1060, that is simply a choice of how much money you have. the 1060 will be better than the 480. We don't know how much better it will be, but it will be better (rx480 has about 970 performance, 1060 is rumored to have about 980 performance). So basically if you want to spend the extra money on a 1060, you will get better performance. if you don't want to spend more money, the RX480 is still a good choice for 1080p gaming @ 60Hz.

No matter which you pick, its going to be a MASSIVE performance boost above the 660 you currently have

We dont know yet, probably the GTX 1060 will be faster, but how faster? We dont know.

And also my guess is that GTX 1060 will cost 300 at launch, even if they said 249 MSRP, RX 480 AIBs are coming soon, probably you will be able to get some nice one around 220.(4GB model)

If a 390 is getting bottlenecked by an FX 8350 @4.0+ in most titles, you can be sure that it will bottleneck a 480.

3+Ghz and extra threads won't save an older and less efficient architecture.

most people don't understand what a "bottleneck" is. I'm not going to say that you're wrong, but I've not seen or heard evidence of that claim

Yeah I agree with you Memories4K, AMD FX8350 are not worth it until they come out with Zen. Intel has them beat by a long run. I would spend the $400 bucks and get a good Devil's Canyon setup like a 4790K

I guess they are outdated now, but the CPU won't bottleneck either one of those GPUs as the front side bus is the same for both architectures.
