The 300 prototype units will ship with the following components: 

GPU: some units with NVidia Titan, some GTX780, some GTX760, and some GTX660 CPU: some boxes with Intel : i7-4770, some i5-4570, and some i3 
RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600 (CPU), 3GB DDR5 (GPU) 
Storage: 1TB/8GB Hybrid SSHD 
Power Supply: Internal 450w 80Plus Gold 
Dimensions: approx. 12 x 12.4 x 2.9 in high 
 
So what did i just list out. Just some specs of the box, just a titan. WHAATTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!

Wow. Super well played.

 

I'm interested in the power supply. nVidia say you need a 600W power supply http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-titan/specifications for a Titan.

In this case Valve knows exactly what hardware components are inside their machine. They know the exact power draws of each component and how much is needed on each rail etc so they can engineer it exactly with a high quality PSU... Whereas the Nvidia minimum spec is made to account for customized PCs with unpredictable power draw.

So basically like 100 people are going to be getting free high spec machines..........

 

Why valve is doing this, I don't know, I expected like 660ti performance at best at like $400 o_o

Isn't steambox going to be mostly a streambox in the end?

As I posted in one of the threads that got locked, this is a prototype. This is an extreme case, and different hardware manufacturers will make lower cost versions to "compete" with consoles.

i bet Microsoft and Sony are pissing them self with there "Next Gen" Consoles... srsly how the fuck can a xbo and a ps4 compete against a titan with an i7 asnd 16gb of RAM

They'll have to compete with price as Valve needs to make a $4-500 version to even somewhat attract console gamers who don't know what they're missing.

I think nvidia wanted to at least have one thing to show off, at the moment AMD is better at everything.

I predict Valve will be doing updated models every year or 2... i dont think consoles will be able to keep up with that.
