R9 480 > GTX 970?

TreesMadeOfTanks

So about a month ago i finally upgraded my gpu from an old r9 5000 Series to a 750TI

I wanted to get the new Battlefront game. and just tonight got around to it...And holy crap..The frame rates are terrible...I had to put settings all on low and window the tab.

So i searched the requirements and it says GTX 970, And the R9 480 is nearly 100$ cheaper...I've also heard nothing but nice things about that as a budget card.

So what do i chose?

CPU Ryzen 5 3600 -  GPU GeForce GTX 1060 3GB - MOTHERBOARD Asus B550 Plus - - HARD DRIVE WD Blue 1TB - MEMORY Corsair 16GB DDR4

the 480 is definitely the better option here if your looking for a budget card, although you might want to wait for the aftermarket cards (coming out very soon) as they will be much better than the reference design. Or maybe the 1060 turns out to be a better option. Im not familiar with your CPU, I have no idea if you would bottleneck it.

The recommended cpu for the game is a i5 6600 If that helps

RX 480 vs GTX 970:

+ Will do better in DX12

+ Will be supported and optimized by its manufacturer in the coming years

+ Freesync is massively less expensive than Gsync

+ Cheaper overall

- Not as good at DX11

- Consumes a bit more power

- No well cooled AIB card available yet

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

I have absolutely no idea how to pick a motherboard, I can read the specs of a GPU, CPU, Ram sticks. And fully understand how good of a product it is...But i have no clue what to look for when motherboard shopping....My entire pc is a hand-me-down i souped up to run the games i normally play.

For a gpu i look for clock speed. v ram. and the resolution it runs at

For a cpu i look for clock speed- And watch reviews on how well it overclocks and stuff.

Wtf do i look for on a motherboard besides the right cpu platform

I'd wait for the 1060 to release so we can get some hard benchmarks. A $200 480 only has 4 gigs of VRAM, not 8 like the $250 option. A 1060 is starting at $260 or so and might be better performance for your money.

thought you were going to wait for Zen? which would be wiser.

the 500w listed......... I would get the 600w. it's built better and you can get one for $29 at BB if you pay attention........... but I wouldn't buy it for an $800 rig.

they have 8 w/4 disabled and can be flashed.......... just sayin. but I wouldn't buy nothing now. I'd save my cash and buy bulk product next year. ( FULL BUILD )

Similar thing happened with the 290 and 290X. Both had full chips with some cores disabled on the 290s, you could flash them to 290Xs with everything unlocked

HOWEVER

that was only with the first batch of the cards. You couldn't do that with any of the cards even a little bit later on.

Expect the same for this.
