I just got Doom "free" with a mobo purchase and started the download on Steam. 46GB... 46GB!!! This is quite possibly the biggest game I've download yet...

as graphics keep improving, games will only get bigger in terms of filesize. so maybe in a few years we'll break the 100GB barrier?

100GB but with multiple terabyte storage devices. thing is, with limited internet speed a lot of people will have quite a big problem

just wait till you buy more games in the future, GTA V is about 65gb, even fallout 4 with not amazing graphics (not complaining) was 40 gb, i kinda miss the days of one disk/cartridge and all your game is ready

Ask a friend on Steam who has the game to create a backup of their Doom game and burn 10-15 DVDs with the backup (the backup tool in Steam should split the backup in 4.7 GB pieces ready to be burned on DVDs) and mail them to you.  He just has to right click on the game, and select Backup game files...   In about a week you get the game in the mail and it only costs about 3$ for the dvds and about 2$ for postage.

 

When the discs arrive to you, simply run to the installer from the first DVD and install their backup into your Steam installation, then go to the game entry and right click on it, hit Properties and in "Local Files" select "Verify integrity and game cache" and Steam should download only what's missing or invalid for your (because it's keyed for other users' copy).

i agree to some extend. true, just popping in a cartridge would be much easier, but that also severely limits what the developers can put in the game, since physical media has a limit in terms of maximum size.

maybe if they started selling games on USB thumb drives? :P

I wish you could choose what resolution to download a game at.

 

Dear game developers, can I PLEASE download a 1080p version of a game if I know 100% that I'm never going to play it in a higher resolution? Save me time waiting and space on my hard drive for something I'm never going to use!

Of course I know installed size isn't the same as download size (55 vs. 46 GB in this case I guess), but you can be sure a small download isn't going to expand to 55 GB.

Over 2 hours in, I've got nearly 35GB downloaded (capped at 5MB/s so it doesn't cripple everything else on the network). I look forward to not playing like most of the other games in my steam library.

Lots of games these days are "optimized" to reduce game loading times by streaming resources into the game as you go through the level, when needed.

For this reason, some game files are often stored multiple times on the disk as a way to prevent game stuttering due to classic mechanical hard drive having to move their heads in several locations to read multiple files at same time.

 

So for example, for each level you may have a large single file with gigabytes of content which is sequentially loaded as you advance through the game level or as the game can dump content it knows it won't be seen again (for example like when player goes through a cutscene, after that voices for that cutscene can be dumped because you won't see cutscene again unless you reload checkpoint/level) but in those gigabytes of content you may have a few hundred megs of "critical"  sounds and textures they want to make sure they're always loaded and kept ready in memory. 

 

You also have to think of this as a consequence of porting games from consoles. Consoles like PS4 if I remember correctly have 8 GB of memory which is shared with the video card so console games have to load and dump content more often from memory. They optimize the games to constantly load the content from disk, and it makes sense then to prevent the disk from reading from multiple locations and just keep reading a single unfragmented file for each level instead.
