I'm getting a R9-290X so should I:

Get keep my 770 for cuda, folding etc (I use after effects and stuff like that enough that it helps)

Put my 770 into my HTPC/server

Sell my 770 for extra money

Sell it or fold/PhysX on it. There's no point putting it in an HTPC.

If you need the money then take it. Not much point in putting it into a server since servers don't really use gpus, and I would only put it in your htpc if it actually has room for it. I don't really know how much cuda matters to you so you might just want to sell it if the htpc wont benefit from it.

Agreed. I would rather have 770 SLI than a 290X... it would be cheaper and faster. That's up to you though :P

That makes more sense, in that case then I would put the 770 in there as long as you don't need the extra cash.

I'm thing the 2gb VRAM could be a problem for new games and high resolutions

Unless you can sell your 770, I'd say get the 770 sli because the horsepower will easily make up for the vram.

I second WoodenMarker on this once again. The GPU's actual horsepower becomes a factor long before the amount of VRAM does. A lot of people (Linus included) are guilty of simply saying "More VRAM is better for higher resolutions" without elaborating that a faster GPU will have a much greater effect than adding more VRAM. It's the truth that more VRAM helps, but it's not the whole truth.
