Is a 500w PSU enough

Why do people keep saying things like that?

Obviously if you put a brand new GPU on an older system, some component might bottleneck it. But that's no reason to advice against buying that card.

I mean... if he spends less money on a lesser card, and then he gets money for a full system update, he will need to replace that GPU too. If he gets the 1070 now, he can upgrade the rest of the components later and keep the 1070.

If you have the money and really want to get a 1070, go ahead. You'll be fine, and you'll have a nice card possibly for a future rig.

And yes, you should be OK with 500w.

Hi i am thinking of upgrading my gpu to a gigbyte g1 gaming 1070 here are my specs:

  • CPU
    Intel Core i5 760 overclocked to 3.8ghz.
  • CPU CoolerCooler master hyper 212 evo
  • Motherboard
    Gigabyte P55A-UD3
  • RAM
    Hyper X Fury (2x4gb) 8gb 1866mhz DDR3
  • Case
    Cooler Master CM 690 III
  • Storage
    Wd Blue 1tb
  • PSU
    Siverstone Strider Plus 500w

500 watt is the recommended on the 1070 but I would recommend more as the temptation to overclock these and you have an overclocked i5.

  • Storage2 500gig hdd

  • Operating SystemWindows 10
  • CPU cooler    H100i GTX

The i5 would bottleneck the 1070 so even if you upgrade the performance would not be worth the money your paying i suggest upgrading the CPU to a i7-880 to just remove some bottlenecks

This has nothing to do with the OP's question....

Doesnt matter he will be just wasting money for no reason, its better to say to him that he would be wasting $450 instead of just answering the question...

1.) Yes the PSU will be way more than enough.

2.) You shouldnt get 1070 for this system.. maybe get 1060 when it comes out?

That 500W is plenty but the problem here that others have mentioned is that the i5 you have is old and a bit of a performance bottleneck to a 1070.
