Converting work server to home server

So I have been able to acquire from work a Dell PowerEdge 2950 (2-Xeon quad-core 2.66, 16GB ram(more can be salvaged from others), 6-500GB storage, running Windows server). I would like to convert it for home use where I can add 3 single slot graphics cards (I only see 3 PCI slots) to it and only have to run HDMI cables throughout the house to connect a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I have access to HDMI cable at a great cost for the long runs. I would like to be able to set up virtual machines, like the 7 gamers 1 PC. 

 

Does this seem feasible?? Any advice, concerns, or help will be very appreciated!!

If it has PCI slots and not PCI-E slots, your going to have to replace the motherboard to be able to install modern graphics cards.

Desktop: Intel Core i7-6700K, ASUS Z170-A, ASUS STRIX GTX 1080 Ti, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512 GB Samsund 840 Pro, Seasonic X series 650W PSU, Fractal Design Define R4, 2x5TB HDD

Hypervisor 1: Intel Xeon E5-2630L, ASRock EPC612D8, 16GB DDR4 ECC RAM, Intel RT3WB080 8-port RAID controller plus expansion card, Norco RPC-4020 case, 20x2TB WD Red HDD

Other spare hypervisors: Dell Poweredge 2950, HP Proliant DL380 G5

Laptops: ThinkPads, lots of ThinkPads

you wont find much longer than 5 meters, and even at that distance you'd be hard pressed to find a cable that manages to do 1080p without glitching out every so often.

I wouldn't use it as a gaming PC, I would use it for just regular home server type stuff. If I were you here is what I would do.

 

1) Remove/disconnect the 2nd redundant PSU. They are loud and overkill for most home stuff. Keep it if you need it.

2) Replace all the fans if you need it to be even remotely quiet. Server fans are crazy loud and annoying.

3) Reinstall w/e server OS that came with it.

4) Set it up as a DC if you want/need one, then install Plex/Emby w/e else stuff you need. I would also setup file shares on it.

 

If you wanted you could build Hyper-V VMs on top of it if that's your thing. I know guys that even run their firewalls as VM w/ PFSense.

You can't do a multi gamers on this as it doesn't support vt-d as its too old. Also these servers are hot and loud.

 

Id toss it and get something newer. I have one and leave it off due to the power and heat and noise.

don't use this as a home server, it will use tons of power and cost about 1000-2000 a year to run in power. Get something newer and lowerpower.

there's a reason datacenters throw them out trough every opening of their building :P

 

all in all, to say it in OP's words: "this doesnt seem feasible"

I disagree with your first point, these were known for shitting a PSU every so often. So having the second one in there can save you!

 

But yeah OP, used to have one of these a few years ago for testing and they will be very slow by todays standards. Once they are up and running they are not too bad for light duties but as mentioned above, they are loud, power hungry and can be a nuisance.

 

If you don't care about that stuff and want to have something to mess about with, then by all means. Just don't expect performance from it.

I honestly hope people understand this multiple gamers on 1 cpu is possible but impractical given the perfect set of hardware.The setups that Linus did are highly expensive, and not something that can be thrown together with parts that are not meant for that function.  Not to mention why would you want to operate on a crippled pc all the time? The most this server would be good for would be data storage and video editing.  These machines are extremely loud and double as a room furnace.  To run this setup like he is talking about he would need to spend a absurd amount of money, and would be cheaper to build a computer in each room. I remember on one of Linus's videos he talked about is new home server and used a Corning optical thunderbolt kit to extend peripherals these kits can be had for $140 - $1000 depending on the length of the cable.  

 

If you want to game in each room in your house buy a desktop replacement/gaming Laptop, and you can game wherever you want.  If you want a data/media server than you should build one from a old pc or build one from scratch, it will be more efficient/quieter and cooler in your house.

the reason why everyone jumps on the x gamers bandwagon is because with all the watercooling, flashy led systems, obscene builds, and so on...

 

we all secretly want to replace our epic setup with a small fanless box that plugs into the network, displays, and peripherals.

the idea that you can make a single system thats hidden in the garage, basement, attic, w/e, and use those little boxes to tune into them for a full high end gaming experience without needing to worry about sound, heat (eh.. my displays are more heat than my rig), and the lack of mobility.

I really appreciate all of the feedback that everyone has given me!!! I ended up just pulling the CPUs (6 E5410's) and RAM (24-2GB) from the old servers. My intent was not for it to be used as a multi gaming rig. I am leaning on using the salvaged parts to make a desktop server that I can run something to create virtual machines on. This way all I need in each room is a network connection, a thin client, and peripherals (say $300 for everything). I have switches and a metric butt load of Cat6e cable (3-500' boxes plus tons of 5', 10', and 15'!!!!). Basically all they will be used for is web browsing, email, music, and movies, not really any gaming. For what everyone has posted, and thank you again for the info, this seems to more of a feasible setup for what I would like to accomplish. If anyone has any feedback on this I would really appreciate it as well.

But yeah OP, used to have one of these a few years ago for testing and they will be very slow by todays standards. Once they are up and running they are not too bad for light duties but as mentioned above, they are loud, power hungry and can be a nuisance.

 

If you don't care about that stuff and want to have something to mess about with, then by all means. Just don't expect performance from it.

I agree with keeping it, but running it all the time is probably a waste, since if it turns off it is not the end of the world in a home enviroment. If it needs to be up 100% of the time, then yes you need dual PSU.

If you configure the CPU to not run at 100% all the time (which the high performance profile does) power consumption will be nowhere that bad.

 

I have several servers (105 TDP, 65 TDP, 65 TDP, as well as an Avaya ERS-5520 (which uses quite a bit of power for a switch), plus bunch of other crap and my electric bill is ~120.00 a month, for the entire house.
