What to upgrade in my Pc parts?

Hello community members,

I've purchased a Gaming Pc more or less 2 years ago and I still consider myself as a newbie in the Pc world so I'd like to have advises on what to upgrade in my pc config. I'm going to list down below what I've got and then you can advise on what and why I should upgrade one part if you do not mind, I'll appreciate a lot!

 OS : Windows 10 Pro.
 MOBO : Asus P9X79 ATX.
 Processor : Intel Core i7-3820 3,6Ghz (up to 4Ghz).
 Graphics Card : Asus 6GB D5 GTX980Ti.
 Mouse : G502 Proteus Spectrum.
 Keyboard : Razer Blackwidow Chroma.
 PSU : Corsair CX750 Watt.
 Cooling : Corsair H80i.
 Monitor : BenQ GL2460HM Ecran LED 24" (60,90 cm) 1920x1080 Black.
 Headphones : Audio-Technica ATH-ADG1 Hi-Fi Black.
 SSD : 2 x Samsung for 456 GB in Raid O.
HDD : 1 TO WD Green.
External HDD : LaCie Porsche Design 4000 Go 8 Mo USB 3.0.
Chassis : Antec Nine Hundred V3 USB 3.0. but I'm going to transfer it to an already purchased Corsair  Graphite series 780T full tower.
Camera : Logitech HD Pro C920 Webcam Black.

My ultimate goal, is to play my games in Ultra (Witcher 3, Skyrim, Doom, Dying Light, CSGO are some games that I own and enjoy playing lately).

Thanks a lot for your feedback :)

Edit: changed a mistake I made with the PSU! Wasn't CW750 but CX750 as HKZeroFive mentioned :)

maybe new CPU and mobo (and RAM, if you go skylake)? just to keep up with the current generation and some extra performance

Maybe stick around for the GTX 1080.

I still think running SSDs in raid 0 is the most dangerous thing ever.

To be honest you could probably get by with that for at least another generation.

I edit my posts a lot.

That rig will be fine for another few years but I am unsure of the PSU... @STRMfrmXMN pls halp.

You're unsure of the PSU because the Corsair CW750 doesn't exist :P. I'm gonna assume OP meant the CX750 (the old green model.

Yeah I know about how he meant the CX750 but I've heard good and bad about it...

The PSU is what I'd consider mediocre quality. It's unlike the CX500 and CX600 which are rated for 30C [EDIT: I'm wrong here, the CX750 utilises DC-DC for the minor rails so the voltage stability is better. It's still rated for 30C]. The component selection tends to be so-so quality but nothing particularly terrible either. As the long as the PSU is kept cool, there shouldn't be a problem.

Of course, a PSU upgrade would be a good idea but it's not necessary.

replace the CX750(if its a green unit) with a better unit(EVGA supernova non-NEX,any seasonic/XFX(non-XT)), get an e5 2670 if you're gonna do any video editing or rendering in the future, and get a gtx 1080/2nd gtx 980ti for better fps. also, maybe replace it with a 144hz/1440p monitor.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

It's just that having 2 doubles the chance of a failure and SSDs area already less reliable than HDDs.

I was saying that a bit tongue in cheek though, it's not really too dangerous but I'd feel safer either in RAID 1 or with a single drive.

Are you solely gaming? Or doing some work on the side?

It's indeed a green unit. I'll look into what you've suggested!

It's only for gaming so no video editing or rendering planned so far.

I'll probably go for the 2nd 980ti since I purchased it less than 1 year ago :)

Thanks a lot for the reply!

i7 6700, but it might be quite expensive. Mobo is your choice, based on stuff you need, and RAM will be DDR4 this time

I can't tell you exactly which CPU will be better than yours and the performance gain with it, so maybe wait for other answers

the e5 2670 is usually avaliable for around $100 or so at ebay used, great cpu with 8 cores HT. just make sure the psu you're upgrading to can support the 2 gtx 980ti before you get it(a good 750w will do).

Then I agree with the idea of upgrading your CPU. If you want the latest and greatest, a i5 6600K with a Z170 motherboard and DDR4 RAM should suit you well. Alternatively, you could invest into a i5 4690K with a Z97 motherboard and just reuse the RAM.

Honestly that i7 3820 and psu are the only things I would change if i were to change anything (priority being PSU.) Add another GTX 980ti in SLI... Should be even with 1080 and in some cases outperform it.

If you got for a second 980ti then most definitely get a better PSU. It's probably fine for now but when you put two hot cards in a system together it would be wise to get a PSU that can handle it better. An 850W EVGA GS/G2, XFX something of around that wattage, Antec HCP, Cooler Master V-series, Corsair RMi, etc, would do you nicely.

  • 3 weeks later...

There we go I chose the parts to upgrade:

Motherboard I went for the Asus Maximus VIII Hero

Processor I went for the Intel 6700k

Ram I went for the Corsair Vengeance 16gb (2x8GB).

Talking with the specialised vendor, I'll need to upgrade the PSU when I want to go for an SLI with my 980ti :)

Thank you everybody for your help and advises!
