Xeon E3-1230V3 VS i7-4770(k)

Somebody brought up in a post I made the differences between the Xeon E3-1230V3 and the i7-4770 (thread here). There was a claim that the Xeon E3-1230V3 is the same as the i7-4770 but without the graphics processor and cheaper. So I did some research and this is what I found on the official Intel website:

i7-4770:

http://ark.intel.com...z?wapkw=i7-4770

Xeon E3-1230V3:

http://ark.intel.com...-Cache-3_30-GHz

The only differences when compared side by side are:

1.) There is no graphics section for Xeon E3-1230V3

2.) Section "Intel® Platform Protection Technology":

  • i7-4770 has "Anti-Theft Technology" while Xeon E3-1230V3 doesn't even have the option.

3.) Section "Package Specifications":

  • "TCASE" is a section for i7-4770 with a value of 72.72C while Xeon E3-1230V3 doesn't even have the section.
  • "Sockets Supported" the i7-4770 has 3 values that are exactly the same "FCLGA1150" while the Xeon E3-1230V3 has only 2 redundant values.

4.) Section "Expansion Options":

  • "PCI Express Configurations" the values are the same besides i7-4770 has "up to 1x16, 2x8, 1x8/2x4" while Xeon is just "1x16, 2x8, 1x8/2x4"

5.) Section "Memory Specifications":

  • "ECC Memory Supported" the value for i7-4770 is "no" while Xeon E3-1230V3 has "Yes"

6.) Section "Essentials":

  • "Processor Number" - (obviously)
  • "Clock Speed"- i7-4770 valued at 3.4 GHz while Xeon E3-1230V3 is valued at 3.3 GHz.
  • "Max Turbo Frequency" - i7-4770 valued at 3.9 GHz and the Xeon E3-1230V3 is valued at 3.7 GHz
  • "DMI" - i7-4770 does not have this option and the Xeon E3-1230V3 has a value of "5 GT/s"
  • "Max TDP" - i7-4770 has a value of "84 W" while Xeon E3-1230V3 has a value of "80 W"
  • "Recommended Customer Price":
    • i7-4770 - "BOX : $312.00
                     TRAY: $303.00"

    • Xeon E3-1230V3 - "BOX : $250.00

                                     TRAY: $240.00"

Ok so thoughts?

Ok so thoughts?

The thoughts are as follow:

If you were to buy i7:

a) Want to overclock - 4770k

B) Don't want to overclock - Xeon E3-1230v3

c) Want the iGPU of 4770 but don't want to overclock - you are doing it wrong, you should get a dedicated GPU

If you were to buy i5:

a) Want to overclock - 4670k

B) Don't want to overclock but have enough money (around 250$) - better get non-OC i7 Xeon E3-1230v3

c) Don't want to overclock - i5-4430, i5-4440, i5-4570 or i5-4670 whichever is inside your budget

So... If Jesus had the gold, would he buy himself out instead of waiting 3 days for the respawn?

I thought the xeon was cheaper...

it is, but the prices from databases are recommended, not real-world. check newegg and other stores, it's around 250$ or in other words 10-20$ more than 4670k.

The only thing that I didn't get was DMI what does that stand for and is it important?

Xeon e3-1220v3 (i5-like) doesn't look as amazing of a bargain as 1230v3 (i7) but it has 2mb more l3 cache which does positively influence the performance (albeit really small), it DOES have similiar clocks when compared to other i5s and it has all the goodies that all higher-end i5 and all i7 Haswell have: Intel TSX-NI which for example i5-4430 doesn't have.

Irrelevant.

The ECC memory support also is irrelevant if you put the Xeon in lga 1150 socket motherboard with a 'regular' chipset like b85, h87 or z87 since they support normal DDR3.

Also, the i7 has locked virtualization features--something that AMD doesn't do.

Irrelevant, afaik you need to put the cpu inside a Q-series mobo to even get to use virtualisation features with intel CPUs.

It's only irrelevant if we're assuming we're using one that's not.

Found a similar thread relating the Xeon E3-1230V3 processors that states the same thing as you Dravic. So I think I am going with the Xeon E3-1230V3 instead of the i7-4770. Thanks for the suggestion! Saved me 50$!

I don't ever remember Linus every mentioning this. The price difference is so large I don't see why he never did a comparison or anything, or even mention it....
