I7 3960x and Asus sabertooth x79 mobo 300$ usd

I'm trying to figure out what cpu to get. I'm buying used and I've found an r9 290 for 200$ cad. I would like to know what cpu would be a good match. I've found some good deals for fx 6300 100$ and fx 8350 with msi 970 mobo 150$. I'm considering an Intel but since recently with games like far cry 4 requiring a quad core I'm not sure about it.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of R9 290 did you scope out?

Get Intel OP.

AMD's got nothing for you that won't hold you back when gaming.

I recommend an i5-6400/i5-4590.

Nice, i'd take that 290 then.

Was going to warn you if it was the blower-design.

Then save your money, find a good deal, or get the 860k then.

Warning you now, you'll be quite disappointed spending your money on an 860k.

get a 4460, got one and don't regret it.. but i have a r9 380x nitro, i don't actually know if it will bottleneck your gpu.. just get a good intel quad core and if they are out of your budget there are decent ones on ebay that still have a year or two of warranty and they are a good value.

You should try to spend like $800 to get a 4690k and a PC with an actual upgrade path.

Now is a really bad time to get a budget PC with DDR4 just coming out, and the next line of GPUs going to feature HBM VRAM.

I always advise against budget builds and non K chips. Because if you're serious about PC gaming, you want to build an upgrade path rather than a budget rig. Because skimping now does you no good when you have to get a new MOBO, GPU AND CPU.

I would suggest just not getting a GPU to afford all the other parts and play on integrated graphics until you can afford a Pascal/Polaris card.

  • 4 months later...

I am thinking about buying a cup of kijiji. It is still sealed in the box. Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing?

soooo what exactly are you buying here? im really not sure :P

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

If it's still sealed in the box, there should be no problem. Even if it's not, or re-packaged, it should be fine unless it's been max OC'd for a few years. (Also, if it's still sealed in the box, it's not "used".)

I buy used things all the time. As long as its not a brand new unlocked CPU I'll be interested. Cause they're usually failed clockers that people are selling to replace.
