^Something like that, but it possibly won't be a bad thing as future APUs are not like they are today, meant for low-budget gaming rigs and the like. With AMD using the iGPU as the FPUs? they should get good performance. That remains to be seen though

Around five years ago AMD put the slogan "The future is Fusion" on their website. Well it's taken five years but it finally has some meaning.

In a sense, it isn't that bleak. My Core i5 2500K has really nice CPU performance but the graphics portion of the chip are a cruel joke. If future APUs are basically something like a combo of an 8350 + midrange 7000 series card, that would be something solid and cost effective.

From what I've read across the internet, the rumour is that AMD is more or less going to focus on APUs and the FX is dead.

If they can make 6-8-core APUs to replace the dead FX series, they have a chance to live again. Or they can make a quad-core that has stronger cores, it would be better--less heat and power consumption.

It's incredible just how much people underestimate AMD. Let's put it like this, shall we? WE are the minority. Us guys with huge great honking computer cases packed full of fancy components and sexy cabling make up a tiny portion of the PC buying market. I would say 90%+ of the market go for just a PC that they put under their desk, switch on, and then go on the internet etc. And in those PCs? you will pretty much find AMD in most of them, given they can offer a half decent CPU/GPU combo.

But that's just the here and now. AMD are supposedly retiring socket AM3+ (which let's face it is years old) but are continuing on the Fusion (IE APU) path. People might laugh now, but imagine a 6 or even 8 core CPU with a 7950 of sorts bolted to it. Then imagine an API that talks directly to both. This means you can ditch Windows and use Linux which is free. You'll also get nine times the performance as there is no software standing in the way.

So as AMD said "The future is Fusion".

I prefer nice compact cube cases compared to those massive towers, though... :P

But your point is valid. The average person doesn't know what overclocking is, the difference between different buses, memory timings, thermal compound or anything really that an enthusiast knows as second nature. What the average consumer basically knows is that "bigger numbers must mean it's better!" and that's about it. They would rather pick up a cheap PC from Best Buy and not have to think outside of setting up Windows for the first time with their account name.

So many people have gone from a ATX PC to ITX only to go back when they realise upgrades are null and void. I'll always have a big PC me as I stuff it to the gills full of hardware :)

Hey, I respect those massive full towers that are so heavy that they make for legit weight training equipment. I just move around enough that a massive PC isn't viable for me. Maybe someday I'll go all out and make 50+lbs of awesome to behold. :P

I really do hope that nine times the performance was an "exaggeration furthers understanding" because that is sooooo so far from the truth. Whether you run it on a Linux distribution or Windows is also quite irrelevant. Linus made a nice point in the recent stream that DirectX is way bloat (which it is), but there are still many software levels below it.

Nine times the performance = best case scenario, glass half full.

Linux = the ability to ditch Windows, which the enthusiast has been waiting for for over a decade since Direct X was released and allowed Microsoft to dominate with their crap OS. Linux, and any new version that comes out, is completely free.

If Mantle does what AMD says it does then that means pretty much direct handshakes between the API and the hardware below it. I read somewhere that Mantle will only work with an AMD GPU. All of us Nvidia owners will have to depend on Direct X. Great :(

Which is not to say that they won't/can't develop an APU that functions like the FX series to put them back in the race. This is my hope actually.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.
