Cat proof cat6?

I finally got awesome internet and a sweet laser modem. However, I have been getting disconnects every hour or so. I decided to make a new cable just in case when I noticed the problem. Cat was biting the cable before I even put the second connector on. >:(

So far the best thing I could find is a techflex cable wrap thing. About $21 for 100 feet.

 

Routing inside the wall isn't an easy option yet and there still the problem of the cable coming out from the wall jack.

 

Anyone know how to cat proof a ethernet cable?

You could try doing some cable management and running it through the wall. Or getting one of those cover that hides all the cables

Get a little squirt gun and shoot your cat every time it bites the cable. My sister's cat was doing the same thing but with power cables... she didn't want fired kitty. It only took a couple of times and the cat doesn't bite any cables now.

I used to put Tabasco sauce on wires for a rabbit. Probably not the solution you are looking for, but its cheap and it works.

Have you installed the latest drivers in your CAT system? There was a known bug where it would be stuck in an indefinite loop of chewing cables.

 

Cable runs are a good idea, even better is to find something your cat doesn't like and using it to discipline the cat. Much like the water bottle idea

You could cable tie the important cables away and then make a couple of extra cables that are more accessible and sacrifice them to the cat, although as someone mentioned the raceways are probably the safest, easiest and neatest option. Knowing how sharp cats teeth are I wouldn't think any protective cable wrap would work, unless its like Kevlar reinforced with carbon fibers. Potentially some steel wire armored cat5e would work but its usually quite expensive per meter and not 100% certainly going to stop the cat.

Ha, training him is the long term solution. Though Tabasco might not work, I've seen him eat spicy food. He is a goofy one.

I would suggest the following:

 

1. Cable runners, several have been linked already

2. Discipline your cat. My cats love to chew cables (USB cables and laptop power cables are their favourites), and I shoot them with spray bottles. Use the narrow stream setting for maximum effect.

3. You can buy cat deterrent spray - you spray it onto surfaces or onto a cloth and wipe an area down with it. It smells very unpleasant to cats (It smells bad to humans too as you spray it, but once it settles, it's odorless). Note: This does not affect all cats. Some won't even be slowed down by it. You can also make your own using some sort of citrus juice like pure lemon extract mixed with water. Check google for DIY instructions.

 

An outdoor cable or cable sleeve will not be enough to stop a determined cat. They'll eventually rip through even the thickest outdoor cable - A waste of money to buy a cable that expensive that won't even stop them. Cable runners are made out of molded plastic, and will do the trick. For patch cables, you could try sleeving them, but honestly you gotta stop the cat, otherwise it's all just stop-gap measures.

After a lot of consideration, I decided to ignore everybody and go with my initial plan. In hindsight, it probably won't prevent a damaged cable. However, it does look kinda cool if you're into that sort of thing and it only cost $10 and some wasted time. Also, I got some hot sauce in case I need a second option.
