i3 6100 OR FX 83xx

The FX is better now but the upgradeable and cost of a higher end board is not so good so I advice you to get the i3-6100 then upgrade to a Kabylake i7 later? If it fits in the board and stuff... (also for GPU why not RX 480 or GTX 1070?) :) Also you can recycle board + DDR4...

I am choosing a cpu to do me for the next 6 months until I get a better Kabylake or ZEN cpu

My choices are an FX 8320(€133), 8320e(€120), 8300(€130),8370e(€150) or 8350(€150)  and get a free €60 game that I was going to buy anyways so I can buy a heat sink with the savings for OCing

OR

an i3 6100 

The main games I want to play in the next 6 months are The Witcher 3, TW Warhammer, Fallout 3, Just Cause 3, Far cry 4, Halo Wars 2, GTA V.

I've looked up conflicting benchmarks on the same games at the same settings so I'm confused so just on cpu gaming, nothing to do with RAM, upgradability or mobo which do you think is the better option?

I would go for the i3. The FX 8000 series is pretty bad nowadays, and there's no path to upgrade. With the i3 you can upgrade to an i5 or even an i7 down the road.

The only way the FX CPUs would be preferred is if you were going to use it heavily for well-threaded workloads like video editing. The i3 is going to be as good or better in just about everything else.

Wow that was pretty unanimous, I think the FX 83xx cpu would do better in the DX 12 in TW Warhammer but even with overclocking it seems everyone thinks the i3 is still the better choice. Idk what some of those benchmarkers were saying about an FX 83xx being competition for the 6100. Thanks for all the help guys

The FX-8xxx does perform similarly to the i3-6100, but there is more than just that to consider. 

 

Upgradability (none with AMD)

Heat (more with AMD)

TDP (more with AMD)

CPU Cooler (needed to OC)

Motherboard (high quality needed to OC)

 

All of which are in favor of the intel product. The i3-6100 will plug in play creating and dispensing less heat, costing you less, with more future upgradability. 

 

I wouldn't even buy DDR3 ram right now, the last and most current use of it is haswell/FX. Nothing coming out will use it and will likely be incompatible with it.

If you go skylake then you will have ddr4 for your next upgrade. Zen and kabylake both will have ddr4.

It's not so surprising, the two aren't miles apart most of the time. Some games that like multiple cores sometimes put them quite close together. But most games rely heavily on IPC throughput once you get to 4 logical cores, and therefore the i3 is usually faster at the times when it matters most. I doubt there's many gaming situations where the FX-8350 is definitively ahead, though.

In truth, the fx overclocked is much more powerful than the i3.  The problem is that to overclock it you need an expensive board and a expensive cooler.  It's a much larger investment.  Also it's a dead end as far as upgrading.

 

Your better investment is to get a good board for the i3 that will allow you to upgrade later to a more powerful CPU.  Or you could even get a cheaper board and upgrade the entire system later on.  You can get the i3 and a board for the cost of a good am3+ board.
