So I've heard it's bad for you eyes? I'm no optometrist but is it really? Like I've been doing it for a month now, about 2 hours a day, so am I fucked and I'll be blind tomorrow?

And if it's bad but I like playing in the dark, how do I solve the issue, do I had a simple light behind my monitors?

THX!

I'd reccomend you to get a lamp.

Also there is no damage to your eyes (unless you game at a full blast brightness then you're screwed)

I've seen your other thread today. Dude what kinds of drugs did you take?

If you were doing it only for a month it's not even an issue. But yeah, it's not that good for you, I always use a backlight to smoothen the lighting transition between display and room background.

I usually have it pointing to my screen or having it next to my screen (pointing to a wall).

Gaming in the dark and having monitor on full brightness will harm your eyes. It won't blind you. But as you age, your eyes become more sensitive to sunlight, you will have trouble seeing in darker environments and sudden bright flashes will feel blinding. So at worst case, you will loose drivers license because you can't rely on your sight while driving.

Things to prevent that from happening. Get a light, even dim to your gaming den. Lower brightness of monitor when its dark. If you use small desklamp, place it somewhere where you don't directly see lamp itself. Behind monitor or behind you.

This seems contradictory to me.  Plus, I've heard that your pupils dilate less as you age, so that should balance out the higher sensitivity.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Well, maybe not if you treat your eyes well. But that wasn't the question here. I'm not expert either.

Yeah I'm no expert but I've heard lots of things that sound like complete nonsense:

  • Trying to look at or read something in the dark is harmful (how?  How can it being too dark damage anything!?)
  • Using a backlit LCD screen in the dark is bad/difficult (um no, the screen produces its own light, it's literally ideal to use it in a pitch black room.  Try taking it out in the sunlight and see if that helps xD)

The issues comes because you need to concentrate harder and make eyes work more. If you look bright screen long hours, don't you feel like your eyes hurt, are dry or tired? Ofc this might have higher effect if one looks around and lets eyes get used to darkness before looking back at bright screen.

I've never had any issues or pain like that, and I've been in all sorts of combinations of room and screen brightness.  I think so long as the thing you're looking at is the brightest thing in your field of view, and it's not too bright (like the sun or something stupid like that) there's no way or reason to damage to occur.  Our eyes can adjust their "exposure" from bright sunny snowy days to the darkest night.  They will adjust to properly expose whatever you are looking at, and so you're not going to go blind staring at a computer screen.

Thats what I said already. But I will stand behind my believe that looking at bright things while ambient is darker is harmful. Long exposures ofc, not like sitting in movie threather for 3h few times a month.

I think the bigger issue is if there's something in the background that's way too bright.  Like, if you're watching the screen/TV that's at one brightness, but in the corner of your eye there's a 100 W light or something, that's coming in at full power or worse, since your eyes are setup to properly expose the screen in front of you, not the light that is much brighter.

Increase eye strain, dry eyes, possible headaches, and it can increase your chances of developing eye issues like Glaucoma

Honestly i cant game in the dark for long, I just get instant headaches
