AMD Zen

  1. 1. Would you wait for Zen or buy Intel CPU now?

    • Buy Intel CPU now
      2
    • Buy a Zen CPU when they are released
      4
    • Wait for Zen benchmarks to surface and for Kabylake to be launched

I might be a little out of the loop, is Cannonlake still a thing?

I think maybe 10% faster than Skylake... Intel releases CPUs with 5% IPC improvement over the previous one... Cannonlake is the successor to Kabylake

What... PCIe lanes!? 16 is waaaaayyyy more than anyone would need (Intel logic)

22 or 38 lanes for current AMD chipsets...so as you see, both more (although it drops down to 16 lanes or somewhere around it when they use PCIe 3.0 instead of PCIe 2.0)

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

Lol so stupid right.  I have one GPU and a PCIE SSD (FROM INTEL MIND YOU!!) and am forced to run my GPU at PCIE x8.  Not a big deal on a single GTX 970, but may potentially be an issue on a 1080.

Right. Like I said, "tweaks," not new functionality.

Kaby Lake is getting native support for Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1, which Skylake requires peripheral devices to support.

Name 5 devices you currently use that require USB 3.1 or Thunderbolt 3

CPU: Intel i7 5820K @ 4.20 GHz | MotherboardMSI X99S SLI PLUS | RAM: Corsair LPX 16GB DDR4 @ 2666MHz | GPU: Sapphire R9 Fury (x2 CrossFire)

I meant that Skylake was supposed to be a 10nm chip but they could not achieve that in time for its launch. So Kabylake is gonna do that instead

That actually does confuse me a bit. I mean, sure, 16 plus the chipset is enough for dual SLI plus NVMe, but that cuts bandwidth to the devices and reaches the platform's capacity in a rather modest configuration...

It's a bit sinful to have a mainstream gaming platform that can't properly and fully support something like dual-GPUs.

"Do as I say, not as I do."

-Because you actually care if it makes sense.

Personally, at this point, I just want to wait a bit anyway. If you buy AMD right now you'll get a shit processor, and if you buy Intel you'll be paying out your ass because Intel knows they're the only option if you want a good processor. Zen looks promising, but I'm less interested in the architecture itself and more interested in there being actual competition. Without competition, you get $1,600 Extreme Editions and chips with more iGPU than CPU.

Thats why I am getting a i3-6100 and Z170 board and waiting for all their fanboys to sell the 6700k's used on ebay or /r/hardwareswap while they have a circljerk over Kaby Lake :D:D

Kaby Lake is still 14 nm, which made news a few months back because it breaks the "tick-tock" cadence. That's three CPUs (Broadwell/Skylake/Kaby Lake) on 14 nm.

Cannonlake in 2017 will be Intel's first 10 nm CPU.
