AMD Zen

  1. 1. Would you wait for Zen or buy Intel CPU now?

    • Buy Intel CPU now
      2
    • Buy a Zen CPU when they are released
      4
    • Wait for Zen benchmarks to surface and for Kabylake to be launched

AMD gave us a glimpse of their Zen architecture at Computex... Would you consider buying it?

Wouldn't be excited about Kabylake - it's what Devil's Canyon was for Haswell

I'd wait for the benchmarks, but the 8 core part sounds promising

Yeah... A TRUE 8 core CPU would be fucking awesome!!! (If it is under $500) Kabylake isn't as exciting but that may change if AMD puts pressure on Intel...

It's probably more like what Broadwell was for Haswell—Devil's Canyon was a special case. We do know Kaby Lake will add a few features, as named releases tend to. Devil's Canyon just tweaked a few things, it didn't add functionality that Haswell didn't have already.

Personally, at this point, I just want to wait a bit anyway. If you buy AMD right now you'll get a shit processor, and if you buy Intel you'll be paying out your ass because Intel knows they're the only option if you want a good processor. Zen looks promising, but I'm less interested in the architecture itself and more interested in there being actual competition. Without competition, you get $1,600 Extreme Editions and chips with more iGPU than CPU.

Wasn't Devil's Canyon just the same chips with better power delivery and TIM?

Even so... If  they keep up the "4 cores is all you need or else buy an enthusiast CPU and pay for all the bells and whistles that come with it" thing they are gonna fail. Plus I am Suuuuuure that AMD will have very high clock speeds so they're bound to be better than Sky and Kaby lake CPUs, despite having slightly lower IPC.

Broadwell was a die shrink - and didn't scale fo' shi' on desktop

What kind of features you expect from a CPU? More USB ports?

And Kabylake is literally the same Skylake with more USB ports...

Kabylake wasn't suppose to even exist until late 2015, we were supposed to get a 10nm die shrink

Because performance - you ain't getting one.

Right. Like I said, "tweaks," not new functionality.

Kaby Lake is getting native support for Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1, which Skylake requires peripheral devices to support.

Yeah, so Kabylake would actually be changes to the chip itself, as opposed to Devil's Canyon...

Still, I'd like to see a bit more.
