I found this dell poweredge 1750 in the version of ebay for my country and i was just wondering  - what can u do with server for roughly 60 USD?? The information that is there for it is just :

2 xeons running at 3.00 Ghz

2 hdd 73 GBs each

4 GBs of RAM

and that is running windows server 2008 r2 at the moment  - that is all.

Can i put my excess gtx 650 ti in it and make like Linus did in that 150 USD 8 core cpu video?

Or can it even support a minecraft server on that thing for more guys without lag??

Any help and information is greatly appreciate! :))

Which specific xeons?

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

no idea  - like i said that is all the info there  - i must contact the guy to find out

There are 2 photos tho that show the basic information about ur pc and i can see there Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.06 GHz 3.05 GHz (2 processors)  and another pic of the device manager witch shows 4 cores so those are dual core cpus for sure

(can those 2 different ghz mean there are 2 different cpus in there lol???)

I don't know what it is with these data sheets not wanting to say what actual freaking CPU it is (they all just say "3 GHz xeon", which is like "3 Ghz i7") but until I know I can't give you any info on how well it will do unfortunately :(

This is most likely the CPU: http://ark.intel.com/products/27278/Intel-Xeon-Processor-3_06-GHz-512K-Cache-533-MHz-FSB

@komar

Not sure how useful a system this old would be for even minecraft. The CPU is of the Pentium 4 era so it is single core with hyper threading which would equate to Windows showing 4 threads but really there is only 2 actual cores and very slow ones at that.

Someone who actually plays minecraft or runs a minecraft server would be able to tell you if this CPU is enough but I'm thinking not.

Also you may not be able to put that graphics card in the server, it only has PCI-X slots according to the dell documentation of that server. I would save up a little more and buy something that is of a newer generation, at least with PCI-E slots.

Thanks a lot!  But it doesn't seem to even have a name?

nvm I found a benchmark for it anyway.

@komar I don't think that CPU is powerful enough to run Minecraft adequately, even if you had 4 of them - the single-threaded performance is just not up to par (roughly a quarter of a modern high-end Intel CPU like an i5 6500 or so).  In addition, I would highly suggest getting 6 GB of RAM at a bare minimum if not 8.  @leadeater is right, you'd be better served just saving a little more and getting something much newer.

Code name Prestonia/Northwood, 130nm.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Xeon_microprocessors#.22Prestonia.22_.28130_nm.29

Edit: Actually think I was slightly off, it's Gallatin based off the Dell spec sheet saying up to 3.2GHz. Prestonia stops at 3.06GHz. Really not much different though.

Lots of hardware like that is basically out there for cheap.  The problem is, the power consumption, even at idle, is often so high that you're spending quite a chunk of coin every month just keeping the thing running 24/7 as one would usually expect from a 'server'.

Keep that in mind, especially if you live somewhere that electricity is expensive, and air conditioning is required in the summer.  That cheap server, might not be such a bargain after all.

This is probably pentium 4 xeons. Don't buy it. Its basically useless and slower than an atom cpu. They also chug power and if your paying for power it would be cheaper to get a 250usd dual lga 1366 system.

I currently have 3 servers with a full 45u server rack in my room. All of the servers I bought off ebay for $150 each or less including all things needed to run like hard drives, ram and cpus. I currently have one Dell Poweredge 750 (dual core, 2 gigs of ram, 1x 86gb SAS Hard drive) running pfsense as a secondary router for 5 ips I own. I also have one Dell Poweredge R310 (Quad Core Xeon 2.4Ghz, 8gb ram, and 2x 300gb SAS Hard drives) running plex and zpanel. And finally I have a beast Dell Poweredge 1950 with two Xeon Quad cores with a total of 8 cores running at 2.5Ghz, with 32Gb of ram, and 2x 360gb SAS Hard drives. I mainly use this server for VMware and Zpanel. I also host a game server and a database for that game server on Zpanel. All of these amazing pieces of art are wrapped in a Cooper-b Line 45u server rack. Now is this overkill, YES, COMPLETELY OVERKILL for what I am using them for. But do they get the job done for a cheap price? Yes. Here are a list of prices for all of the items in the rack.

  • Dell Poweredge 750 - $65 + $12 shipping
  • Dell Poweredge R310 - $135 + $free shipping
  • Dell Poweredge 1950 - $80 + $32 shipping
  • Dell-PowerConnect 3348 - $40 + $10 shipping
  • Cooper-b Line server rack - $50 + free pick up
  • A box of cat6 ethernet cabling kit - $50 + $20 shipping

                                                                  Total = $495

A server like the one you listed above surely capable of running a moderately sized minecraft server. I honestly say "go with whatever your heart desires". But be carefull and don't buy anything overpriced or something that looks a little "off" on ebay. If the person doesn't list any specs or details I usually skip over them and their dream like prices.

@Rektagon your R310 is actually more of a beast than your 1950 in terms of compute. 1950 is core 2 quad series, R310 is an i7 980. Even though fewer cores, it'll still out perform. Overall a nice lab and a very budget friendly setup. I got a 42u rack about the same price via craigslist too.

thanks for the info guys :)

I decided to quit this idea due to a few things - first in order to get decent parts i must use ebay or some other site of this sort witch wont happen bec i dont wanna deal with shipping across Europe or the Atlantic (those are pc parts after all they do brake and they very often disappear around my country also) ( the site i used till now just doesnt have enough parts for sale on it or they are way too overpriced (35$ for 60 gb 10 years old hdd yea XD)).

Second for USA and UK and a lot more countries 500 USD i bet  aint much but for me i would just prefer to use my "good" pc than dealing with old outdated servers that will cost more and more in el power bills over time.
