Details on AMD naming scheme and r9 280x and r9 270x

Youbetternot

Here are some things to clarify the naming scheme and details

According to the latest information AMD Radeon R9 280X and 270X are both rebrands of Tahiti-based graphics cards.

AMD Radeon R9 280X with TAHITI XT

Starting from Radeon R9 280X, apparently this is a pure HD 7970 GHz Edition refresh, only with slower clocks. What is interesting is that both R9 280X and HD 7970 GHz Edition will be priced similar, around £230 ($299). The R9 280X will make use of full Tahiti XT GPU with 2048 cores, 128 texture units and 32 ROPs. Of course there’s 3GB GDDR5 384-bit memory on board. This card will be available starting from late October.

AMD Radeon R9 270X with TAHITI LE or PITCAIRN?

The R9 270X is not exactly a pure refresh of Radeon HD 7950. In fact it only has 256-bit bus, which is less than original 384-bit width. What it means is that 270X is a cut-down version of Tahiti PRO, whereas the R9 280 will feature a full TAHITI PRO processor (pure HD 7950 re-boxing), but this is yet to be confirmed (this is just my theory for now). There are only two options here, either Gibbo is right and this is Tahiti with 256-bit interface (supposedly TAHITI LE), or this is just Curacao aka Pitcairn.

This is some new news to me! A little disappointing that everything is basically a rebrand, but I'm still going to wait and see those benchmarks before I make my purchases.

You should probably give some credit by posting sources.

So, with R9 290X taken as flagship single GPU, then WTH are they going to name the dual chip single card? R9 300, R10 290x?

Definitely skipping this generation of graphics cards then. I don't want to buy a new card with near identical performance (not like I need one anyways).

 "Everything is basically a rebrand"

Yeah, 7970 sure had a 512 bit bus and 4GB memory

This is incorrect... The 260x. Dat card... it's not a rebadge, otherwise how did they get TrueAudio to only work on 290x, 290 and 260x?

So... If Jesus had the gold, would he buy himself out instead of waiting 3 days for the respawn?

When is the NDA lifted, when will we see real reviews?

Linus said in the live steam that the NDA date is also apparently NDA since AMD hasn't specified it.

Yeah this is pretty much as expected. A new high end card and old cards (or similar) for the rest of the lineup, just like nVidia. That naming scheme still looks weird though...
