Windows xp is the os that I started on with a celeron pc. and that is what I judged all pc's on when I went on the great mac quest of 09. I came back to pc with a much faster computer running windows vista in 2011 and I loved it. I thought xp was dead a long time ago but come to find out its actually a island of stability and a lot of people still run windows xp. But in a few months it won't be supported so what will replace xp? will it be vista?

XP is still very much alive in probably most businesses. They will continue to use them until they have a reason to change them, which could be several years from now.

I think this poll kind of leaves out what windows XP is still mainly used for. I don't think any enthusiast, power user, gamer etc. would have a reason to still use XP, other than maybe they don't have enough money to upgrade their computer to something that could run a newer OS. I think XP is still used in places where they simply need their computers to work and do simple tasks. As long as they work for those simple tasks (mostly keeping things organized and using microsoft office in places like shops, banks, offices, schools etc.) there's no incentive to actually upgrade them, it wouldn't do much other than costing the company money. THAT'S where windows XP is still alive. Not in households.

Definitely! XP is one of the most well known, widespread and stable operating systems ever made. I remember downgrading any computer my family bought to XP during the Vista era. It really was unbeatable until Win7 came out.

Windows 8 runs better on older hardware than W7. Should have put that in the polls instead of 7.

Windows 8 is an overall shithole for average users, I had to downgrade 10 people so far.

if I had it I'd just mod it to death and call it a day.

It only was alive because there was still support for it. Many large corporations switched or are in the progress of switching to windows 7 this year ;)

I honestly dislike having to work on XP machines now. Every now and then I show up at a professor's office (I'm in IT at UMT) and I see that old windows logo on the tower... and sigh.

I still use XP, it's good but it's had its life cycle. Am going to upgrade to 8 because it's the newest though.

Can I just say something... Go Win7 64bit.

Have Windows 8 on my laptop and I do not see it winning my vote..

I run Win7 on my main rig

Phhhttt. I know people who still use Win 98, Win 2000, Win NT and you think XP is dead? Its got more user base than any other OS in the world.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

XP is not exactly dead for web browsing, but once support is ended in 6 months (April 2014), it will be open to security flaws that microsoft will no longer patch. XP is not exactly a bad OS, but it is out of date and not as suitable for the modern internet as modern OSes. When XP was launched, IE5 was an amazing browser (now it is hated by web developers all over the world). It has undergone massive improvements throughout its life, but its time has now come and it needs to be replaced. Amazingly, 20% of PCs still run XP (source: http://gs.statcounter.com/#os-ww-monthly-201209-201308 ), but it's not a secure OS, and it doesn't have many of the good features of 7 and 8. Game devs are dropping XP support left and right, and even high end software is now starting to remove support for XP. Remember, it was released in 2001, 12 years ago, and has had a really long life. Even Vista has already finished its mainstream support cycle and its end of extended support is scheduled for 2017 (and I can't see microsoft extending it like it did for XP).

XP is dead, support is practically non-existent. It might still be used for minimal computer usage like facebook, web browsing, email etc. It could still be used but Drivers and basically all support is already non-existent and I bought a laptop with no OS (very very simple Toshiba laptop) for some projects and experimentation and several of the software I wanted to use were limited to XP so when I installed XP, there was no driver support from the official Toshiba site for XP and I had to search some Obscure sites for driver support and Microsoft did not provide support for it as well since XP basically dead. In the end I managed to make everything function properly but a lot of things did not function. I finished my project and experimentation and installed Ubuntu.

I don't think there is any support left for XP, it's been dead in the water for about a year, I struggled to get drivers and a lot of stuff never functioned (this was a year ago). It was freaking awesome and had a fantastic run...

I like hearing people go on how its an old OS and its still unsupported as far as security updates but then I look at the plethora of companies still selling ISA Bus PC's (yes new) and think you guys and gals need to look beyond your one computer.

Just because its advised to upgrade does not mean people actually upgrade. Anyone remember the OS NASA as using on the Shuttle's? Yea, should look it up so you get a hard cold proof of that.
