@The Flying Sloth

Just get one of the quad cores for lga 775 like everyone has mentioned.  I have had my share and the Q9650 is a beast but it's a little overpriced IMO. However, I bought one for $100 about 4 years ago and sold it for $100 a year later.  So considering how stable the prices have been on them, you might be able to do the same.  Otherwise I'd look for a Q9400 as was suggested already.  The Q6600 is ok, and you can get it for like 10-20 bucks. Ironically linus did a video on them probably a little more than a year ago and the prices went up :)

I had E6600, Q6600, Q9650.  They all overclocked like champs too.

Also, be sure your board supports the latest quad cores.  It might need a bios update, or it might not support them at all.  I had one of the best gigabyte 775 boards. And be aware that not all 775 boards are up to the task of overclocking, if that's even a concern.

The FX-4350 will destroy anything you can drop into an LGA771 or 775 socket...here against the BEST cpu you can put in there:

Yeah but would you recommend he buys an am3+ board for a 4350, especially considering he wants to potentially upgrade to zen in the near future?

And we're assuming his board will support the Q9650.  Also the Q9650 at 4.1 GHz was no slouch!

I'm pretty sure I sold my gigabyte board for 75% of what I paid for it, and didn't lose a penny on the Q9650. There's a really good chance someone could sell a Q9650 six months from now for what they pay for it today.

Btw, just for arguments sake :) , there were some extreme versions that were better than the Q9650, although they are probably still really expensive on the used market.

I just found that the 5460 isn't that much of an upgrade on my current 7400, I am doing music/video production and I really need quite a large pick-me-up. I play current games with a HD 6950 windforce (fav gpu in the world, I own like 6) and 4gb ram

how is the x5460 not much of an upgrade when you think a qx9770 is................

look, its really simple, anything more extreme than the q9400 or x3330 on the 775 socket is going to be rare and expensive, and not worth the extra cost, its a false economy (here in the uk atleast) thats why i have a x3330 in my ghetto spare pc

771 modded cpu's/sockets are complicated for some and if he isnt up to doing that, obviously they arent a viable solution

am3+ would be a silly upgrade this close to zen's release

just... just get a q9400/x3330 or a q6600 for as cheap as you can get it, throw it in there along with 8gb of ram and wait, thats honestly the best solution in terms of cost for performance in your situation

if you really have to upgrade now because none of that stuff is powerful enough, go intel and buy a skylake chip

X5460 are good. It's a pair of E8500s on 1 chip. And 1 E8500 is already faster than 1 E7400.

no, of course not.

i would recommend an H170 or B150 motherboard and a core i5-6400/6500, that will work well for gaming for a long time.
