I currently have a PC (in my sig) running a 775 cpu and 4 gb ram. it is getting to the point where it is unuseable and since it is my daily driver I would like to upgrade it for the least cost. I will need (if I stay 775) 8 gb ram and probably something like a QX9770.

Researching prices I found that an FX 4350 was cheaper than the extreme cpu and it had better performance. (Australia prices are terrible)

My question is, what 775 CPU should I get or should I go AM3+ now and upgrade to zen when it gets here?

save up and go for the Zen CPU

you are going to waste money on a dying AM3+ socket platform

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

I'm open to anything, really best price/performance at this point, I do have to admit I am a bit of an AMD fanboy and zen is very enticing

no news yet

hold on to your current system

if you still need a upgrade

go to ebay and get a q6600 for a drop in upgrade of your system

The Socket AM4 will be unveiled in 30 may during computex. But Zen chips might take as long as Q1 2017.

You can try a mod to your socket and put a Xeon E5460 in there, it's probably the best value.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

I like this one, although since I haven't done it myself I can't guarantee that it covers all you need to know - like whether only some motherboards support it or similar stuff. Research is valuable and will save you money and hassle :)

I just found that the 5460 isn't that much of an upgrade on my current 7400, I am doing music/video production and I really need quite a large pick-me-up. I play current games with a HD 6950 windforce (fav gpu in the world, I own like 6) and 4gb ram

In that case, I'd go for a big upgrade. What's your budget? We can come up with something. Not AM3 though.

I am a reasonably large player in the Brisbane secondhand market, would getting a quad core Athlon be better? I will move to ZEN when it comes out and need something to last till then, Budget can be considered to be infinite, I just want best price/performance (preferably secondhand) that I can get rid of when ZEN gets here

An FM2+ Athlon won't be much better than a Q6600.

But if you're looking for second hand parts, look for a Xeon E5640 and a LGA 1366 motherboard. It's the workstation / server version of an i7-920 but with slightly better per-core performance, and you can overclock it with some BIOS tweaks.

x3330/q9400 is gonna be the easiest and cheapest cpu upgrade providing your motherboard supports them, the higher end q9xx chips with large caches are still fairly expensive for what they are, and generally not worth it (here in the uk atleast)

if not, then a q6600 is your second best bet

and yes, 8gb ram, you really need that

i wouldnt bother swapping out your entire systems internals for a still pretty old 1156 or 1366 platform, they very nearly as ancient as your 775 socket, spend as little as you can on your current 775 platform to get a quad core and 8gb of ram, and wait until you have the money to upgrade to zen or sky/kaby

for reference i have a friend in serbia, who has no money, he was struggling along with a e6600 duel and 4gb of ram, i posted him a q6600 and 8gb ddr2 i had in a cupboard doing nothing, now we play gtaV together lol, tempted to send him a ssd aswell, his computer bothers my pc ocd, i must improve it!

I play GTAV now on this system, I have the money to upgrade but I would rather wait and get a newer CPU. Prices in australia are fucked and here FX chips are faaaar cheaper than anything remotely close by intel. Oh well, I guess we've just gotta hope ZEN is half decent

My previous gaming rig was a Q9400 @3.0Ghz with 8GB of RAM. Performance wise it's within 15-20% of my current 4170.

In Canada 775 CPUs aren't worth much, the most expensive C2D is around $3 CAD and C2Q don't cost much either (at least in Montreal). I actually got my Q9400 and Q6600 for free.

I'm actually surprised someone is gaming on a C2D!

It performs surprisingly well, I can play most games on medium to high settings full 1080P.

so then why are you calling it unusable,

and why are you saying you'd rather wait and buy something newer but ALSO asking us what 775 socket cpu you should get?!

WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM US?!?

*flails

q9400/x3330 or wait for zen, with atleast 8gb of ram either way... is simple... i think, i dont know anymore Q.Q

Haha, the CPU is fine for gaming but I use it for music production as well. in-game the CPU works fine but booting, opening programs and all my recording/DAW software are laggy AF and my CPU and RAM are currently the bottleneck. I am definitely getting 8GB ram and my question was, what should I do as a short-term solution until ZEN arrives?
