My Mom Uses Linux?

So, my mother, to clarify, is my great aunt who adopted me when I was about 3-4 months old. Putting my situation into perspective, she's 53 years old and her first computer was a Windows 98 machine which remained her daily driver until about 2012 (I know... Right?). I finally pushed her in late 2012 to buy a new computer which, at the time, ran Windows 7. Slowly but surely, she adapted to the new environment and handled it well. Now, I've exposed her to a Windows phone instead of Android, Windows 8, and now Windows 10. As for myself, I use a wide variety of devices running OSX, iOS, Windows 98-10, and about 7 different Linux machines. I want to convince my mother to use Linux (Mint Xfce in particular because of its simple and familiar design). She however has no experience with a Linux based operating system and I was wondering which distros I should try with her and teach her about. Keep in mind that I don't want it to be too complicated for her, but I want to be able to teach her about all the advantages of Linux. Any suggestions? (NOTE: I'll keep posting here with updates on how it's going. Maybe even vlogs)

Mint, Ubuntu, and Debian are a few that come to mind. Some people say Arch can be a pain since it doesn't start you off with a lot.

if shes going from windows to linux, mint, ubuntu variants (anything besides unity), or debian are pretty friendly. You'll likely want to use the LTS verisions which arent as high maintenence. theres also Manjaro, which is "friendly" arch, but its more bleeding edge

My grandmother used ubuntu for years and made the change extremely easily.  She was immediately impressed by how it just worked, and "everything was the same everyday" xD  A big improvement from the 100+ virus-infested XP machine

What's wrong with her just staying on Windows? Is there any reason why YOU want to switch her over to Linux?

Unless the PC she has is some low end, sub $500 PC, it shouldn't really benefit from having Linux. You're only gonna be limiting what she can do on the PC and if she ever want to install something that doesn't support the Package-Installer for easy installation, she'll need to use the Terminal or the confusing Synaptic Package Manager (because yes, it IS confusing for someone who doesn't know what they need or want or require, with many things named similarly)


If you think she can handle that or that you will always be there to basically hold her hand whenever she doesn't just want to check her emails and do something else, then go ahead, switch her to Linux for a few days, see how she like it. I suggest Mint considering the interface is somewhat similar to Windows.

 

But really, unless she's highly prone to getting viruses, just don't. You're just going to make this complicated for her for no reason. I doubt that at her age she enjoy leaving her comfort zone to try "something new". My mother sure as hell doesn't. She's still not used to Windows 10 after switching from Windows 7 on day 1...

My mom still enjoys using Windows XP way more than Windows 7 or 10.

My mom used Lubuntu for a year or so on an old laptop. The Windows XP install was in such a bad shape, I decided the easiest solution (given how she use the computer) was Linux. It did the job well enough until she got a new computer with Windows 7 on it. She mainly uses the web browser, and sometimes some word processor and perhaps in some cases spreadsheets, where Google Chrome and LibreOffice did an excellent job while running Lubuntu.

This. I don't know why so many Linux users try to convince their family and friends to switch to Linux. Always keep in mind that what works for you may not work for other people, especially if they're not tech savvy enough.

And besides, it's operating systems we're talking about, not religions, for crying out loud!

I think I should clarify. The whole point of this is purely educational. It also provides her with more options, especially open source options. Linux is an amazing platform with so much possibility. Not showing her alternatives to the closed off system she currently uses when I have the chance is just wrong. I'm doing this because I believe that everyone should be able to learn from technology and it should be an open platform no matter what. I've explained my reasoning to her and she said she is open to it.

I don't think you're getting it . This is supposed to be a fun experience for my mother and I and trying new things. I didn't realize people would be so against variety. You make it seem like its a bad thing.

If she actually had a reason herself to jump ship to Linux then go for Ubuntu (don't know why there's so much hate for Canonical here but I'd use Unity TBH) but really it sounds like you're more interested in the idea of moving your mom into an open source platform than letting her use what works just fine for her. It sounds to me like you have yet to convince her that moving to Linux is what she should be doing and demonstrating using, say, your own laptop to her will likely bewilder her, using terminal commands to install software, the launcher being atypical to what she's used to, Nautilus, etc.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

what I find funny is how people seem to think the biggest challenge is the change in ui and not the whole new way you use the computer.

 

terminal to install, update, remove, the way there is not my computer just a file manager. How annoys it can be to get devices work such as printers or scanners.
