old computer, new GPU?

I was thinking of upgrading later when the GTX 1080 is out, and so i thought giving my previous graphics card (GTX 970) to my best friend.

Im not sure if the GTX 970 will work in that computer

As long as the computer has a PCI X16 and a PSU of 500W or higher it should work.

That system meet these requirements.

Sandy Bridge CPUs are still quite competent for gaming, I'm sure that his i7 2600 and 10GB of ram will in no way bottleneck a gtx 970. Just make sure his power supply has the appropriate cables.

The 560TI needs more power then the 970. You will be fine. You might need an adapter for the gpu power connections, but they arent expensive.

Yup. plenty for one 970. I would consider buying a new one with bronze cert. since cheapo once can crush the whole system.

I have an i5-2500k clocked up to 4.9GHz and a 980Ti @1400MHz...  Even at stock speeds the i7-2600k will be fine.

At 1080p, and stock CPU speeds, the 2600k "might" bottle neck the GTX1080 a little bit (compared to an equivalent clocked skylake)... but nothing noticeable.  And at 1440p, I doubt there will be any bottle neck at all.

The only difference from that system and a more modern one is that the PCIe slot is a Gen2 not Gen3. (Mainly has to do with the amount of data that can be carried on the bus).

 

Will the card work?                              Yes it will. The 2600 has 16 (gen2) pcie lanes for a graphics card. (gen 2 has a slower data speed than Gen3 but the card will still work as GPU's are backwards compatible and he is not running SLI)

 

Will the power supply be enough?      It should (but I would also recommend getting a newer PSU soon. Builder PSU's are not known to be the best and all PSU's lose some ability over time. A Bronze rated PSU with a good review is not that expensive ~ € 71- € 90)

 

Will the i7-2600 bottleneck it?             I doubt it. If it does so what? That would be a good card to hold over into the next build for your friend.
