GTX 1080 worth the upgrade?

The Afro Samurai
Go to solution Solved by The Afro Samurai,

We can call this done as the general consensus is get another 1440 monitor and stay where I am.

Now that we have benchmarks for the 1080, not what a lot hoped for but kinda what I expected. I didn't think only one card would do 4K Ultra everything at 60fps. I have two 980's with a 1440p monitor that just went out. I've always had buyers remorse with my 980's as I got them and then two months later the TI dropped. I have the money to get two 1080's on launch and since I need a new monitor, is it worth it to grab two 1080's and dump my 980's and get a 4K display. I know it won't be 100fps and keep in mind that I'm not a competitive first person shooter game player and more of a third person scenic game player.

So you think it's worth trying it with a 4k display and overclocking them? Or since people are dumping their TI's like crazy picking up two TI's?

If you regret purchasing two 980's, don't repeat that process with the 1080's.

i would only reccomend upgradeing if you are in the 970,390,390x,980 area

I don´t think that´s quite the area to upgrade from. I was thinking more closer to an aging 280/7950/780 card.

what I listed and below...

I wouldn't recommend upgrading if you have 980, 980/sli 980 ti/sli titan+

If you still dont understand what im saying im saying everything under the 980, you should upgrade to the 1080/worth

1080 is still a decent jump from 980. The problem is that the 980TI complicates things. I would only upgrade if heat output is an issue. If you want to upgrade your display, then maybe but I wouldn't go with 4k. Grab a nice ultra wide 1440p.

I'd only do this if there's a 4K/120Hz monitor on the market.

For 4K 60Hz, 1080SLI would be overkill.  There are some situations where 980 SLI or a single 1080 doesn't quite hit the magical 60 FPS, but we're talking about spending $1400 so you can get an extra ~15 FPS and have a ton of headroom when you hit the 60Hz cap. (Assuming you get GSYNC, which I consider essential if you're buying 4K.)

I think an overclocked 1080, or overclocked 980 SLI, is already very good for 4K gaming.

Personally, I dunno if I can recommend 4K right now.  There's still niggling issues with some software and games not scaling properly, mostly older titles where the UI is too small to use properly but even Steam for example doesn't scale so chat windows are relatively quite small and it takes some gettingused to.  It's still cutting edge and it comes with some annoyances.

Now this is getting off graphic cards and more into display but is 100hz over 60 hz that big if you don't play competitively? Based on the way the thread going you guys got me leaning towards and ultrawide and keeping my current cards until we get better 4K displays. But don't we always fall into the trap of waiting for the next big thing and never making the purchase as there will always be something new?

Actually, the 1080 can´t achieve 4k 30FPS consistently fro what I´ve heard. I´d say 1080SLI is just above sufficient.

1080 is about 5% slower than 980 SLI, and from personal experience I can say that most new titles run on Ultra settings around 40-50 FPS.  With slight settings reductions or even overclocking most of these titles can hit 60 FPS easily.

A single overclocked 1080 will most likely be able to do the same, or come very close.  At some point the second 1080 would just be future proofing but imo it'd be a waste because it would also go largely underutilized at 60Hz.

I'm in a very similar situation as you.
I have two 980s aswell and a 3440x1440p monitor. I will be waiting for a 1080Ti or a new Titan. If they aren't good enough I'll wait for either AMD's new cards or Volta.

How do they handle your LG monitor?

Pretty well. I'm able to play all games at 3440x1440 at High to Ultra settings.
Sometimes I have to set some things like shadows to medium, but that doesn't happen very often.
