It seems that there's been a bit of odd misunderstanding with "4k" resolution monitors.. at least in my opinion, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but would it not be accurate, based on recent history, that resolution titles are based off the height? Therefore.. 720p 1080p.. wouldn't "4k" actually be 2160p..? Even if this is incorrect.. 3840 is the resolution width..

So as I was writing this, I sort of came to a conclusion, that the "resolution" such as 4k, is in a different "naming sector" then 1080p.

Leaving me with this

1080p = 2k Res

2160p = 4k Res

So, am I right, wrong, what's going on here.

They just decided to change the name to the amount (roughly) of horizontal pixels there are, 4,000-ish so 4K

I roughly means 4x the pixels of HD because it is x2 vertical and horizontal.

This is what I was assuming was the rational. Either way yes, tecnicaly it is 2160p, but someone need to come up with a more marketable name for it so it is 4k instead.

My rig: 2600k(4.2 GHz) w/ Cooler Master hyper 212+, Gigabyte Z68-UD3H-B3, Powercolor 7870 xt(1100/1500) w/AIO mod,

8GB DDR3 1600, 120GB Kingston HyperX 3K SSD, 1TB Seagate, Antec earthwatts 430, NZXT H2

This is the reason it is called 4k. Because it isn't a standard yet and has multiple resolutions some of which are 4k+ pixels.

It's much easier for people to remember 4k instead of 2160p. Than 4320p when 8k comes around.

In my opinion - "4K resolution" sounds more appealing to the ignorant, and the ignorant (generally people 30+ years old) are willing to blow more money when they're easily persuaded by higher numbers.

What's the most recent HD standard before '4k'... 720p and 1080p.

Now compare 720 and 1080 to 4000. People who don't know any better will assume that the "4000" is so much better, considering they dont understand pixel density or the fact that the incoming video source is still the same 1080p (or possibly even that dreaded 720 upscale).

Just like that, you've made lots of money with nothing more than a naming gimmick.

I'm pretty sure it's exactly the same as how any teenager in a computer segment of a retail store like target or kmart can sell $2000-$2800 laptops to people who will only use them for internet browsing and microsoft word.

I 100% know the difference and am willing to blow more money on it because it is much better than 1080p. Don't group people like that either since a large portion of teenagers and 20 year olds don't know what the fuck 1080p stands for even. Like I said before it's a lot easier to also say I have a 4k display instead of a 2160p display.

Now compare 720 and 1080 to 4000. People who don't know any better will assume that the "4000" is so much better

They will see those numbers and go "wow 4000 now and the old one was 1000? That must mean it's 4x better" and they would be correct in this. Plus it's a basic rule that you should do some research on a product before you go out it buy it. If someone doesn't that's there own fault.

I assume your talking about apple right here. Lot's of people buy Apple products, even if it is only for simple things, because of the way it looks. It's a fashion statement as much as anything else you own. They also have a top notch build quality and an amazing battery compared to most of the products that are on the Windows side of things. That is starting to change but Apple had the 'ultrabook' style of laptop in the palm of it's hands.

It's fair to assume that many non-tech knowledgeable people would consider a quick google search and a chat with the shop assistant is 'research.'

Yes it's the fault of the people who don't do their research, but if people are stubborn enough in the first place to blow this money on a display without researching it, would they not be stubborn enough to also blame the sales people and not themselves?

Tis the nature of the stupid person, never at fault always other people.

I'd like to assume a majority of people would research a brand new tech when buying a 10k plus tv but I know some people won't. Even when it drops to 3k I know some people will still not learn about it but what can you do. Can't fix stupid.

They're using the name 'ultra HD' in advertisements so that might be the name when it becomes a standard.

This wouldn't surprise me at all. Numbers seem to confuse a lot of people, most people know about SD, HD, and Full HD but many of them have no idea what the the numbers of each is. Using a superlative like "Ultra" would get the point across well enough with those people.
