Hey guys!

I am currently having my garage converted into my very own office space and I will require Ethernet internet access.

My idea is to use a long outdoor Ethernet cable, like this one, to run from my router located inside of my house, through my garden and into my garage / new office space. From here I then plan to hook it up into a switch, like this one, and then hook up all of my computers through that switch.

I have never really done anything like this and I was just looking for some advice on good alternative products and / or if this is a normal thing to do. Honestly any advice or feedback would be very helpful.

Just to be super clear:

Thank you to anyone what takes a read of this and any advice!
Much love to you all!

Yeah I don't see a problem with that ideally a solid copper cable and not a CCA (copper clad aluminum) is best but that does come with extra cost, also having it inside a conduit even though that is rated for direct burial isn't a bad idea.

yeah it will work

usually people run their cables inside a PVC tube though when underground

I don't mind paying a little extra, if you have any suggestions link them and I'll have a look :)

Theses ones are copper cored cables, a bit more than the CCA ones:

Trenching in PVC is by far the best way to go, much better protection as well as the option of easily pulling a new cable thru in case of damage or possibly upgrading in the future. Other than a bit of manual labor, it really isn't too expensive for short runs.

If you want a quick link up, a pair of Ubiquiti Nanostations will be around $125 and should give you ~150mbps and be quite reliable. I ran a link with Nanostation M2 Locos over ~70 feet for a year to my detached garage and as far as I remember it never went down.

As for the original question, yes the switch is all that you would need in the garage to connect multiple devices, so long as the other end in the house is connected to a router.

I am really not a fan of wifi except for phones and laptops. I like to have a solid ethernet connection for my desktops.

Thank you for the help! :)
